The Fold, Truck and Sail Plan

17 November 2011

I found this on Latitude 38, if memory serves it was built just down the road.

As we often point out, you don't need a million-dollar yacht to access the much-envied lifestyle of international cruising. As witnessed during the recent Baja Ha-Ha rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, just about any boat built and equipped for offshore sailing can take you to the same idyllic anchorages.

This year's fleet contained a typical variety of boat types, from vintage production-built sloops launched as early as 1959 to gleaming late-model beauties that looked as thought they'd just left the showroom floor. Without question, though, the most unique boat in the fleet was the folding catamaran called Cat 2 Fold, which is the one-off brainchild of multihull designer Kurt Hughes. Other small multihulls fold for trailering, as this one does, but we'd never before seen a cruising cat propelled by twin unstayed cat rigs — complete with wishbone outhaul tensioners reminiscent of windsurfter sails.

Add to all this the fact that owner Brian Charette trailered the curious cat all the way from his home base in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, just to do the Ha-Ha. But then Brian isn't your typical Wyomingite. For one thing, he's got dreadlocks down past his shoulders, he builds eco-friendly homes out of straw bales for a living, and, well, we just can't picture him wearing a Stetson hat and hand-tooled boots.

With her ability to set her "bi-plane" sailplan in a variety of positions, including wing-on-wing, Cat 2 Fold can easily sail deeper angles downwind than most cats — including dead downwind — and she also seems to point higher than typical production-built cats.

Brian learned to sail eight years ago, but apparently really caught the cruising bug when he took a passage-making course from Charlestown, SC, to Fort Lauderdale, FL. Other than that trip, he'd never before spent a night at sea or navigated offshore. But apparently he's a quick learner. At the awards ceremony Brian and his crew, Trent Sellens and Charlie Magee, earned the much-coveted status of Soul Sailors because they sailed the entire course of the rally, despite having to ghost through extremely light air at times. As a result, they tied for first in the rally's Margarita Division (multihulls), sharing the spotlight with Gary Kahler's San Diego-based Corsair 31 Drei and Herschel and Susan Pence's Vallejo-based CSK 40 Sailpotion. For a complete recap of this year's Ha-Ha rally, see the December 1 edition ofLatitude 38 (downloadable for free from our website later that day).

Counting Down the Days to the Opti World Cup

16 November 2011

The Rugby World Cup is over with the result we were looking for. Great success all round for New Zealand. Now we have the Optimist Sailing World cup coming to Napier, New Zealand.

With most entries now received, we are thrilled to confirm there will be 48 countries competing with 211 sailors coming to Napier to contest the World Championship. Many teams are bringing extra supporters and family with many arriving early December. Hector Guzman, the current national champion from Mexico is the first to arrive at Labour Weekend to compete at the Winter Champs in Auckland which he won. Hector trained in Auckland for a week and now is based in Napier training in preparation for the contest. We will also see several teams here for a training clinic starting on the 20 December.

Southern Pacific Boats and Erickson Marine have been busy building and fitting out 25 RIBs for coach boats.

These are a mixture of 4.7 and 4.3 meter boats with Honda 30 and 40 hp motors fitted.

The boats have all been purchased by sailing clubs around the country and will take ownership after the event.

Thanks to a grant from Lion Foundation the cost has been subsidised by almost half.

They look great.

Radio Networks have kicked of the radio advertising campaign for Opti Worlds with hundreds of advertisements in support of our major sponsors going to air around the country to date.

The big billboard erected at the Napier Sailing club is catching the eye of everyone passing by.

Optiworldsnz Facebook and the website www.optiworldsnz.com  has been a great success and attracted lots of interest. Brian Haybittle -the Facebook coordinator- has run 3 competitions on Facebook to date. Paper Tigers busy this weekend

14 November 2011

It is a busy weekend for Paper Tiger sailing in New Zealand this weekend, with regattas being hosted in both the North and South Island simultaneously.
With over 40 boats expected to be competing across the two locations, competition will be fierce with the regattas being a good prelude to the Nationals taking place in New Plymouth at New Year.

Up North

The 2011-12 Paper Tiger North Island Freshwater Series continues this weekend with the Ngaroto Regatta being hosted by by the Ngaroto Sailing Club.
The event will see over 30 Paper Tigers from all over the North Island competing in close quarters racing on the confines of Lake Ngaroto just north of Te Awamutu, racing as always is expected to produce some very tight results.

The event will see competitors throughout the fleet fighting for every position as they attempt to take out the Regatta as well as gain points towards the overall North Island Freshwater Series Title which concludes in Taupo mid March 2012.
Contenders for the overall Regatta Title include past winners Terry Valder, Richard Dent, Doug Ferguson, Mark Bell and last years winner Rowdy Leatham .  However you can guarantee they will be chased hard by other potential regatta winners including Scott Pedersen, Hayden Percy, Sel Pedersen and Grant Allen.

Wellington's Glenn Syman is currently leading the North Island Freshwater Series after a dominant performance in the opening regatta over Labour weekend. However, the series is still wide open with multiple contenders chasing hard.

Down South

The Paper Tiger 2011 South Island Freshwater Championships are being hosted on Lake Wanaka by the Wanaka Yacht Club.
The regatta should see at least 12 Paper Tigers (along with a handful of A-Class) blasting around the lake competing to be named the 2011 South Island Freshwater Champion.  John Kennett will be a hot favourite for the title, however Dave Norris in his brand new boat "The General" will not allow Kennett to have it all his own way.

Also, the fleet from Nelson Yacht Club may make an appearance.  With Dave Shaw (the 2011 National Champion) and Bob Preston (2009 & 2010 National Champion) both being Nelson sailors, this could really mix things up and make the regatta competition red hot!

The Paper Tiger is a catamaran designed by Ron Given of New Zealand in 1968. It is widely sailed in New Zealand and Australia.
Paper Tiger Overall Dimensions
Length: 14 ft (4.3m)
Width: 7ft (2.2m)
Minimum Weight: 110 lbs (50kg)
Sail Area: 100 sq ft (9.2 m2)

NEW ZEALAND MATCH RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

10 – 13 November 2011

PRESS RELEASE                                                                                                                            13 November 2011

MATTHEW STEVEN

CROWNED 2011 NEW ZEALAND MATCH RACING CHAMPION

Matthew Steven was today crowned the 2011 New Zealand Match Racing Championship

beating Scott Dickson 3-2 in a tense and exciting final.

Left to right: Tim Coltman, Matthew Steven, Matt Clough, Jono Clough, Chris Jones

Steven joins Scott’s brother Chris Dickson, Phil Robertson, Dean Barker, Gavin Brady and Rod Davis on the list of names engraved on the New Zealand Match Racing Cup.

The final day of racing was in complete contrast to Saturday’s when only one flight was sailed due to a distinct lack of wind.   What little wind did find its way out on to the course was soon consumed by the rain which descended over the fleet in the final stages of the third flight of Round Robin Two.   In contrast, Sunday’s racing saw an average 18 knots sou’west breeze which ensured the championships were  completed.

Scott Dickson, representing Long Beach Yacht Club in California, led the competition from day one and finished the two Round Robins with only one loss under his belt.   Dickson earned the right to choose his semi-final competitor and opted for Tugdual Piriou who was at that time making his way to the airport!  Piriou and his crew from Cercle Nautique Caledonien in Noumea knew they had to return home on Sunday, as one of the crew is a Heart Surgeon and has a pacemaker operation to perform on Monday!  Dickson was thereby granted an automatic place in the finals.

Matt Steven and the Wellington Spirit Yacht Racing team, having finished second after the Round Robin competition, made up the second semi-final against the RNZYS Lion Foundation Youth Programme team skippered by Benny Butcher.  The Wellington Spirit Yacht Racing team were without Chris Jones who dislocated his shoulder just before the one and only race on Saturday.  They had to forfeit that race in order to bring Jones ashore.   Logan Fraser was granted permission to replace the injured Jones, who had to contend with watching the proceedings from ashore.

Steven beat Butcher by 14 seconds in the first flight, and were gifted the second finals spot after Butcher’s team lost a crew member overboard and dropped their spinnaker onto the bottom mark. Two nil to Steven with a finishing delta in the second flight of 1 minute 32 seconds.

Understandably, Dickson and his crew were feeling confident having won through to the finals in such a convincing manner.  It was obvious they were intending to keep up their winning ways by beating Wellington Spirit Yacht Racing by 17 seconds in the first flight.   Steven won the next two flights going 2-1 up.  Flight four was a very tight race which saw Dickson edge ahead to grab the win by 19 seconds to tie the finals up at 2 apiece.

All square - one flight to go.  Dickson and his team made an uncharacteristic mistake in the pre-start to land a penalty for a port starboard infringement, however Dickson led off the start line and indeed for the majority of the race, before Steven rolled him to windward in the last 50 meters.   Dickson still had a 360 penalty turn to complete and could do nothing but watch as Steven crossed the line ahead and put his hands firmly on the New Zealand Match Racing Cup.

“Wellington Spirit Yacht Racing is thrilled to win the New Zealand Match Racing Cup after many years of trying.  Three years ago we finished fifth, last year we were second, so we are extremely happy to finally have our hands on the trophy” an elated Matt Steven said after the race.

Scott Dickson was gracious in defeat and was pleased with the way his team sailed.  “Obviously the finals are where it counts and Matt and his team sailed a great final without any mistakes.  They were on the top of their game and able to capitalise on that and come out holding the trophy”.

Hi David,

We took “Squealer” (formerly ”The Butcher”) for her first sail last night. Just a quick spin up the harbour and back. Looks very promising! A few things to tidy up over the weekend before we are race ready.

Mods included a new keel, 2m retractable prod, cockpit modifications and a new motor. Keen to get on the race course!

Cruiser Attacked in Pago Pago

8 November 2011

Thanks to Latitude 38:

November 7, 2011 – Pago Pago, American Samoa

Disturbing news has come out of Pago Pago, American Samoa. According to the Samoa News, as well as independent cruiser reports, on October 27, Kimball Corson was savagely beaten aboard his Lake Pleasant, AZ-based Fair Weather Mariner 39 Altaira by two assailants. The two suspects were seen paddling what appears to have been a piece of floating dock on Pago Bay toward Altaira around 11:30 p.m. The witness called police because she knew Corson, 70, lived aboard.

Authorities say that after boarding the boat, the men — both in their early 20s and both on probation from previous crimes — found Corson asleep below and began beating him. Corson reported that he was trying to fight off the attack when one of the men wrapped a strap around his neck and started choking him, but that he was able to wedge his fingers between the strap and his throat. As Corson continued to struggle, the suspects reportedly dropped the strap and wrapped an electrical cord around his neck. He told police that he remembered thinking, "So this is what it's like to die."

In the meantime, the local marine patrol had reached Altaira. According to the police, both suspects jumped off the boat, and one started swimming away, while the other hid between Altaira and her dinghy. Both were apprehended, though police say both resisted. Corson was whisked to the hospital, where he was treated for broken teeth, a broken upper jaw, and multiple bruises and lacerations, receiving a total of 29 stitches to his head. According to one cruiser report, he'll be staying with friends ashore before moving back to Altaira.

The two suspects, Jason Muasau and Vatia Tugaga, have each been charged with first degree assault, first degree burglary and felonious restraint, as well as resisting arrest — all felonies. Bail has been set at $100,000 for each. There is no known motive.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the cruising community, as Pago Pago is well known as a friendly and welcoming port. One cruiser identified only as Gary said, "Nothing like this ever happened here before. All the cruisers are in shock. This is the friendliest place we have ever been — really nice, helpful people and I'm sure they will not go easy on guys that go against the traditions. This place is still far safer than any place in the U.S."

New Zealand Spars and Rigging Media Release

1 November 2011

31 October 2011

New Zealand Spars and Rigging congratulates Ross and Campbell Field on Leg 1 Global Ocean Race victory

Ross Field wanted to work with new companies when he embarked on his campaign to race two handed around the world in a forty foot boat, and he elected to team up with New Zealand Spars and Rigging, when it came to readying BSL for the mammoth voyage.

Now BSL has taken victory in the 7,300 mile first leg from Palma, Mallorca, to Cape Town, after 32 days, 17 hours and 13 minutes at sea.

“We and Fineline wanted to support Ross. We have developed products together, and supplied the boat with new aft rigging, furling stays and custom components. We will also be sending product to the boat as it is needed during the various stopovers,” says Managing Director, Richard (Bart) Bearda.

Ross, a former Volvo Ocean Race winner, who is sailing with his son Campbell, is well known as being one of the most discerning skippers in the world, and every aspect of his campaign is well thought out.

The Global Ocean Race website reports that prior to the delivering the boat to the GOR start in Palma from Lymington on the South Coast of England, the Fields had raced BSL once in the Rolex Fastnet Race and GOR Leg 1 was an eye-opener for two highly-experienced sailors, but newcomers to Class40: “It’s a really startling boat, quite amazing,” says Ross. “Sometimes, it just kept going faster and faster and you had to wonder when the limit would be reached.” There was one major crash that the duo will always remember when they feared the mast would be lost, but there is no major damage. “The boat is immensely strong and the only breakage has been due to our errors,” confirms Campbell. “Nothing has failed on board.”

Their Class40, BSL, was formerly known as Desafio Cabo de Hornos, and placed second in the inaugural Global Race in 2008-2009.

The race started on 25 September 2011 in Mallorca, and stops off in Cape Town, Wellington, Punta del Este and Charleston, before it finishes in Mallorca.
