Hi all. New to the site and thanks for the forum.

Don't know if anyone can help or if this is the correct category to ask but I am removing the rudder. At the bottom of the skeg is the bronze foot which I was expecting to be bolted in from underneath. On removing the anti foul etc there is now no indication as far as I can see as to how it has been attached.

Any ideas? Question

some times the bottom foot is attached to the skeg last, thus keeping the rudder in place - try removing the antifoul from the sides of the foot along the skeg, you will hopfull find the fastings. A heat gun will also help in removing it buy helping to break any epoxy bond.

The rudder is keyed to the shaft, it lifts up not down. Grab the tiller and the bronze casting it sits in and heave upward. The shaft will move up slightly and reveal the keys to the person waiting on the ground, slip the keys and draw the shaft up till the rudder is free.

Did that make sense?

Yes. Maybe a bit more detail on my part will explain.

I am having to fit a new rudder as the old one had broken away. (Another story!) I have already removed the old, now damaged gudgeon's by lifting the shaft 10-15cm. New gudgeon's are to be fitted to both the shaft and rudder which of course then needs to be glassed over. This would be easier to do in my workshop rather than on the hard, fitted to the boat, at head height and above. The shaft does move about 70cm up but gets stuck about the top key hole and goes no further. (Not surprising after 25 years in place I guess) Just to get a nice safe job done I was hoping to take the lot (shaft, gudgeon's, rudder) into the engineers rather than do it all still fitted to the boat.

Thanks for the info so far.

From a friend that has a Cav

"On ours there were 2 nuts in the bottom of the bronze foot. You have dig around to find expoxy plugs, remove the epoxy (can soften it with heat, or just chisel) and then you can undo the nuts."

Yes. Was expecting nuts or such at the bottom of the foot but nothing. Is a 83 hull so could another system have been used on the later Cav's I wonder?

Cav, If the rudder is off and the shaft is sticking use brute force. Put a block under the tiller on th edeck close to the shaft and use the tiller as a lever. Or use a bigger hammer.
