Rob Webb; work in the mysterious world of finance/insurance/banking stuff; born and learned to sail in the UK (S coast and channel ports); been living and sailing in NZ for last 7-ish yrs; currently own Aily's Comet, a Lidgard 35, one of only 3 'performance cruisers' designed by Duthier Lidgard in mid-90s; most of my 30-odd yrs sailing has been coastal cruising but with the odd offshore passage or race thrown e.g. S Pacific islands or Fastnet (never again)! Currently working a 6 month gig in India but missing AC and looking forward to getting back in time for a long summer cruise; hope to catch up with some of you guys out there.

Craig Smith: Currently working offshore 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off as a Dive technician on deep sea diving systems.
Learnt to sail in Paremata, Wellington. Ps, Moth, R class, 470, Laser. Then went on an extended OE. Found work in the North Sea, bought a 30ft Dufour and went cruising in the med for 3 years with the girlfriend. Came back to NZ around 1990. More Laser sailing but couldn't keep up with the "schoolboys" sailing at that time (Dean Barker, Hamish Pepper, Dan Slater, etc etc). Done one Coastal, cruised my Dad's Lotus 1280 in the gulf a bit until he sold it.. (Damn). Then got stuck into my other passion, motorbike racing..
Got back into sailing a few years back with my eldest son sailing Optis. Son #2 starting this year. Trying to buy a fast 35ft cruiser-racer, but I'm fussy and the market has few boats in my price range. Still trying though..

The photo below is the reason for the "Smithy 09". (And you think racing yachts is expensive!!)

Knot me - other half and I have had a 10.5 Ron Holland for the past 3 years - not great sailors I have to say but did manage get from here to Great Barrier and back again earlier this year. Boat was in Auckland for several years racing and cruising ... just a cruiser now.

Informative - sure can be
Funny - Oh yeah some real funny looking characters here. That's why YY is kept on Waiheke so much, that and his habit of spooking children and small furry animals Smile

Mothership? Oh just better knot go there. Has delusions he's sailing on a real fast 930 you know Wink
A bit like Marshy but he's on the 3rd best sort of 930, which is a Young 88. The 1st being a pure Class 930, 2nd a turboed but I'm sure you already knew that Twisted Evil

As for our illustrious leader Squid. I'm told he's pretty harmless but with 8 arms surely one or 3 has to be playing up as some stage.

Don't be shy, jump on in. Most of us don't bite. One or 2 can get a bit twitchy but Squid just feeds them some of the medicine and they scrub up knot too bad. Mt Gay can tame a savage beast... errr most of them anyway Smile Smile

I think I better go hide for a while, I hear people are coming to take me for a swim.

I haven't sailed on a 930 (the fastest one in the country or otherwise) in a few weeks now. I think the last time was when we beat everyone in the Opening Regatta for Richmond by over 20min (and were the second boat home overall behind Starlight Express).

It's been Demonstrator and Thunder, lately. Somehow we keep ending up with rum - not sure how that happens considering the golden rule is if you can't do it with one hand (and a beer in the other) then it's not worth doing on a boat

Cool Cool Cool

Hi Noodles, welcome aboard.

The main protagonists are myself (I bought this site from Zoe about 18 months ago, you'll see her around still), Mothership who is a computer geek tho he tries to deny it, he hosts the site, Yachtyakka lives on Waiheke and produces our irregular newsletter, which you will receive now that you are a signed up member.

There are other regulars around but you'll figure them out in no time.

There's lots of free entertainment to be had, some useful information, occasional bitching and whining, and every now and then I like to think we actually do some good.

Ok Squid you asked for it

1, favourite rum
- Mt Gay or Appletons, hard to decide
2, favourite mixer, if any –
- L&P, Ginger Beer or straight
3, favourite boat types - multi, mono, old, new, rig ..
- what ever I'm sailing at the time, square rigged / traditional rigged, though enjoy playing with newer stuff, Squid you have been out with me on one boat that I enjoy driving, but that aint sailing
4, Americas cup, good, bad, not interested, waste of time
- interested in the stupid crap that happens, when the racing is on I watch it if I can, looking forward to the Claytons cup simply because I'll have a good chance to see it all
5, Y88 or R930, turboed or not - which is best
- can't say as I have never been out on a R930, did the coastal on a Y88(ducks as Knot Me takes aim Smile ) in 2004, second on line for div4
6, best rum
- Mt Gay or Appletons, still cannot make up my mind, is it to early for another drink...
7, who should make the call on race starts
- Skipper of the boat, and up to the skipper on how the decision is made,
8, best cure for seasickness
- yet to be seasick, but have found that putting a sick person to work helps more often than not
9, who gives the best weather forecasts
- depends on where in the world you are, Met Service seems to err on the side of caution more often than not
10, favourite anchorage
- there are many Asanvari, Worlds End, Whangaroa Hbr, Akaroa, Long Island (chesterfield Reef), Timor Sea(on a construction job the fishing was GREAT).....
11, what does your council charge for moorings/boating related activities
- Apparently 10% of what I pay in Marina fees goes to the council
12, most often consumed rum
- Mt Gay Smile
13, any luck fishing lately, what did you catch
- not recently but in Jan we caught a Tuna about 8kg, off Percy Island on a hand line
14, boats used in the olympics - what should they be, do you care
- Will leave this to others as I have little experience in small boats
15, first boat you ever sailed on
- That I remember was an H28 for a few days then a larger 3 masted black boat,
16, favourite yacht designer
- Woolacott - I have a little one that is still getting worked on.
17, idiot power boaters - how should they be dealt with
- large hard object driven in their boats
18, your opinion of Yachting NZ
- From reading comments here and comments elsewhere they need to improve on their communications, I get their briefings email regularly and it does have some good info there.
19, Give us a piece of random information
- a number of terms in rigging came from equestrian, ie martingale
20, Do you need ice or just chilled glasses?
- nope
21, Storage capacity of rum hold in yacht?
- I do require some extra ballast for the yacht – any donations of rum greatfully received – could fit several cases
22, Recommended cure for hangover?
- helping a mate on his dairy farm to milk 300 cows, you either collapse or the hangover is cured, unfortunately this cure is hard to achieve whilst sailing
23, Favorite human mixer? (as opposed to Q2). Extra points for photo.
- hmmmmm, could get into trouble here so will leave unanswered, though there were photos on an earlier post that had Knot me blubbering
24, Rums you now prefer to pass to Starboard (if he's still around) avoid?
- bundaberg
25, Would you attend a CREW party to sample Squid's Rum mulling?
- yup
26, Favorite RUM cake receipe?
- do not currently have one
27, Can you beat Wolf's Tiramisu?
- never tried it
28, Rums you have heard about and would like to taste?
- lots and lots
29, Can you tell us the Mt Gay flavour?
- Eclipse – has a luminous golden amber glow and distinct floral and spicy notes, TASTES GREAT !!!
30, Do you have a doctors certificate if Rum is not your normal choice?
- rum is my normal choice, is there another...

14. boats used in the olympics - what should they be, do you care
don’t care sorry

hmmm…literally ’sailed’ or just first sailing experience? Until recently I’ve been more interested in sunbathing on yachts than sailing them so I have no idea …

17. idiot power boaters - how should they be dealt with

Knot Me
PostPosted: Thu Oct 30, 2008 9:52 pm

Well it looks as if I'll be saving fortune in Xmas cards this year. I'm just knot feeling the love here.

1, favourite rum
Old school navy rum, knot the Bundy crap that came later but now I've grown up (a bit) Gay baby, all the way.
2, favourite mixer, if any
Ginger - ale, beer, raw root, any form
3, favourite boat types - multi, mono, old, new, rig ..
One that sails to windward well otherwise knot to fussy. Fast is good.
4, Americas cup, good, bad, not interested, waste of time
dead duck, can it. It's killing yachting.
5, Y88 or R930, turboed or not - which is best
The pure path to truth and enlightenment can only be found on a Class 930. All other are just pretenders. Mind you a walk through transom.....
6, best rum
When younger and for effect, pussers but the morning after, Gay by a mile. Probably Gay Old.
7, who should make the call on race starts
The bloody skipper and no frecking other bugger.
8, best cure for seasickness
Who cares, I don't do seasick but if required a harsh glaring stare down combined with, in a deep growling voice "Just harden the f*ck up, young fella!"
9, who gives the best weather forecasts
Old Ken next door, never been wrong.
10, favourite anchorage
Deep Water Cove, great diving
11, what does your council charge for moorings/boating related activities
$105 but soon to be $175 per annum.
12, most often consumed rum
These days Gay by an easy 100:1
13, any luck fishing lately, what did you catch
Knot a lot but a couple of very nice Flounder last Monday
14, boats used in the olympics - what should they be, do you care
If I thought about it I'd think I don't care. Otherwise without a doubt 50 class 930's. {just so Mark doesn't hurt me}
15, first boat you ever sailed on
At 4 weeks old how the feck do you expect me to remember. I'm told a 26ft ply shoebox with a point one end. By myself a Sabot.
16, favourite yacht designer
Mark 'Sooty' Stevens
17, idiot power boaters - how should they be dealt with
Sit them all on Mt Ruaphus crater edge and when the lake overflows next time ride the feckers down like giant toboggans. Just before you run out of snow jump off and let the tupperware sins of humanity explode into small tiny fragments on the rocks below. Then get a flame thrower and ........... Opps sorry, enjoying the thought a bit much there.
18, your opinion of Yachting NZ
It's been better.
19, Give us a piece of random information
Elephants are the only animal with 4 knees
20. Do you need ice or just chilled glasses?
Softcocks, who needs to chill anything (says the boat with no fridge)
21. Storage capacity of rum hold in yacht?
Currently running between 7 and 9lts. Can't quite remember where we stopped the other nite.
22. Recommended cure for hangover?
Subway. The key is getting the jalapeños.
23. Favorite human mixer? (as opposed to Q2). Extra points for photo.
No contest. She can shake or stir me, I don't care either way.
24. Rums you now prefer to pass to Starboard (if he's still around) avoid?
OK I'm confused. Just for a change........knot
25. Would you attend a CREW party to sample Squid's Rum mulling?
The though of the Squid 'mulling' personally I find a tad frightening. Probably but with a 'minder' just in case.
26. Favorite RUM cake receipe?
Still a work in progress. I'm finding it hard to swap out the Galliano in my Harvey Wallbanger cake.
27. Can you beat Wolf's Tiramisu?
Squid Mulling and now beating Wolfs Tiramisu, can't he do that himself???? Now I'm really afraid. Kids "go to bed now".
28. Rums you have heard about and would like to taste?
Captain Morgan Spiced Gold. {looks down and Gosh, fancy that}
29. Can you tell us the Mt Gay flavour?
Vanilla, Standard, White and Old.
30. Do you have a doctors certificate if Rum is not your normal choice?
Wouldn't be hard even if totally knot required this this instance.

Don't tell me - you started with something that was 8.3 metres long, you added a walk-through transom and some extra length...you wouldn't have ended up with something resembling the magic figure of 8.8, would you?

All you need is the obligatory matching pair of Kate Bosworths and you'd have yourself a very attractive boat.

Nice looking boat AC!!

Thanks smithy. Yeah, after spending nearly a year searching for the 'perfect' 35ft-ish fast cruiser I fell in love with AC within minutes of seeing her and knew she was 'the one' (if only relationships were so simple)! She's amazingly spacious (friends nickname her the tardis) and I've got a small queue of keen buyers should I ever want to sell - I have considered upgrading a couple of times (that illogical urge to simply 'go bigger' for no sensible reason) but realised that I couldn't get anything signifcantly better without trebling my money. So instead I've invested a lot in improving AC (you name it, it's been done!) and reckon I'll keep her to enjoy for a few more years yet.

Good luck with your own search (I had a couple of near misses following surveys).
