At a Politburo meeting to discuss economic plans for 2019, China’s top leaders agreed that they should be ready for problems and must, above all, maintain domestic stability. It was a striking contrast with the same meeting a year earlier. Then the Politburo oozed confidence, concluding that China was the world’s economic engine, with a new level of power.

This nervous, inward turn explains why, after a year of eye-for-eye fighting with America, China is determined to bring the trade war to an end. The view, once commonly heard in Beijing, that it could outlast America in a grinding tariff battle has given way to the realisation that, as the country with the huge trade surplus, China has more to lose upfront. Optimism that the government could fight on two fronts—taming its heavy debt burden at the same time as taking on America—has also cracked. The economic outlook has darkened.

the number of lies he told about his russian dealings in the run up to the election...

A newly obtained letter has revealed US President Donald Trump signed a letter of intent to build a Trump Tower in Russia.

The 2015 letter, obtained by CNN, marked the beginning of planned talks between the Trump Organisation and IC Expert Investment, the Russian company which would have been responsible for the developments.

Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, admitted the letter was real but claimed "no one signed it".

Trump said he doesn't "even remember it", suggesting his former lawyer Michael Cohen was the one who signed it.

But the document, which has since been made public, shows the President's signature alongside that of IC Expert Investment owner Andrey Rozov.

Giuliani later backtracked, admitting he was incorrect about no one having signed the letter.

"I was wrong if I said it," he told CNN. "I haven't seen the quote, but I probably meant to say there was never a deal much less a signed one."

This is important because during the 2016 presidential campaign trail — and since then — Trump has repeatedly insisted he had no business interests in Russia, and had "nothing to do" with the country.

Giuliani later disputed the quote CNN attributed to him.

"I don't think I said nobody signed it," he told the New York Daily News.

But he then bizarrely reversed his position and said that "of course" Trump signed it.

"How could you send it but nobody signed it?" he asked, dismissing the letter as "bulls**t" because it didn't result in an executed contract.

The fascinating thing about this, its the first time the media have confirmed that US troops are in Syria (that I'm aware of).

I know the US navy and air force have been around the place, i.e. with the navy firing guided missiles at air bases etc.

I've been suspecting secret ops / SAS type US forces to have been doing some recon / intel, but now this very public falling out between the Defense Secretary and the Pres, over something that wasn't actually anything (officially).

Was anyone else aware the US had ground forces deployed in Syria? and had it been confirmed in main-ish stream media at all?

If ever there was a conflict that will go pear shaped for the US, Syria would make Vietnam look like a paint ball tournament.

Obama asked Congress to authorize the use of force in Syria and elsewhere . .

Congress refused to even hold hearings

So Obama just went ahead and did it (drone wars and "advisers" in Africa too)

Terrible precedent that empowered the imperial presidency even more - now Trump thinks, probably correctly,

that he can do whatever he wants militarily on his own authority.

On a much lighter note, here is some contemporary Canadian humor on the "idiocracy" to their south .
