Yep, you're onto it. Then I would prime using PA10, the red one, not the black. I have tried many different primers/undercoats over the years and am slowly coming back around to the old faithful PA10 as being probably the best performer. I wouldn't worry about VHT. Diesels just don't get hot enough. VHT is fine on exhaust manifolds etc, but the engine blocks don't need it. So go for a good top coat.

Yes Wheels is right re primer, just degrease carefully first, as an aside the old epiglass engine enamel was just the same mix as their Marinecoat ie single pot Alkyd enamel. Post cured nicely with the heat of the engine!

On our Yanmar we used a waterbased primer which has phosphoric acid in it and called Blackguard. It is awesome. Then just get a can of spray paint colour matched at a car paint place and your engine will look like new. We did ours about 10 years ago and it still looks great.

Yes it is, but it does not like heat too much. But you can get a water based primer also with Phosphoric Acid that can withstand 900degC. Also a great product. But I have found you really need to top coat it with something, because after awhile the primer surface chalks and rubs off. I will try and remember the name and post it here.

Is it normal to paint the exhaust?

Mine looks a little rusty. Do you treat it with an anti rust paint, or just wire brush, clean and undercoat?

give it a good tap to make sure its still solid, ours looked rusty but felt solid till 11.00pm one night we decided to motor and it decided to part company, amazing how much water goes through a engine in a short period, ended up disconnecting water intake and put hose straight in to bilge, basically recycling water

Assume you're talking about the exhaust elbow, otherwise where did all the water come from???

Our elbow is stainless, and in pretty good nic. The exhaust manifold is what I was referring to. It's just surface rust by the look of it, so I'm going to wire brush down and paint over it.

It seems to be cooled by the engine coolant, so that should keep the temp down quite a bit.

Anybody know where you can get the Lehman (or Lee's) red engine paint?
