Allan Civil Memorial Rotoiti Classic: 26 November 2016

Looking for a trailer yacht event with a difference, the 2016 Rotoiti Classic may just be the event for you. This year’s Classic is offering short, medium and long haul formats and naturally some after race socialising. Did we mention the multi hull division as well.

The 'Classic' course will come in three lengths, Short, Medium and Longhaul. The small boat course is designed to allow smaller boats to compete and have a cruising feel to it. They will do one lap of the lake (then light the BBQ for the rest). The medium caters for the mid-size trailer yachts and will be based on two laps of the lake. Larger trailer yachts, other approved yachts and trailer tri's will go further (afield) completing three laps of the lake to really test the endurance of the competitors. The courses have been selected to allow for more corners and tactical decisions with some different landmarks chosen to send the fleet around.

We are accepting entries in four (4) divisions, catering to Trailer Yachts, trailer tri’s and other approved yachts. Starts will be around 10 am on Saturday, prize giving Sunday morning.

“A” Division yachts of NZTYA Handicap above 0.860 inclusive

“BDivision yachts of NZTYA Handicap below 0.859 inclusive

“C” Division yachts –open to All Trailer Yachts, sailing a shorter course (read cruiser’s)

“D” Division yachts – open to Multihull Trailer Yachts

A Division: 3 Laps Lake Rotoiti (about 50 miles)

B Division: 2 Laps Lake Rototi  (about 34 miles)

C Division: 1 Lap Lake Rotoiti (about 17 miles)

D Division (Multihull’s) 3 Laps Lake Rotoiti (about 50 miles)

The last one.was a real challenge with some great competition

We've since glassed the front of the clubhouse to make conditions more favourable for the "afters" and we have a damned good catering team to help make it a great event once again

I'm a starter for this year - let's hope the weather gods are better tempered. :) Regatta 056.JPGRegatta 050.JPGRegatta 045.JPG

I took Pacifier over to Lake Rotoiti for a quick fang around the lake and it was great fun! We had really good speed reaching and running. Upwind in light airs we were high and fast but in heavier air the rig tune and overly full (secondhand) main wasn't quite as quick but we did go better with a reef in. Pacifier was the first boat home in A division.

Allan Civil's sons raced the immaculate Ross 780 "Major Tom" and smoked everyone upwind with five on the rail. I'd like to think that the local knowledge helped too because they cleaned us up on handicap.

BOPTYS has to be the most welcoming yacht club in NZ. Lots of people came over for a yarn and to tell us about all of the weed spots... although we still landed in some of it. They put on a great breakfast on sunday after the race too. Thanks for a great weekend!
