Ross 930 self tacking jib ( new constuction )

Recommended Posts

In the past my UK Tape drive self tacking jib has always had full battens , Looking at different options and have had a discussion with Doyle and they suggest this . My Ross has the keel extension with L bulb . And yes typical winds in my area is 5 to 15 knts.

Neither Doyle SanFrancisco or Doyle HeadOffice like the full batten jib arrangement.  Doyle HeadOffice recommend the top batten pocket be double sided.  One side for a partial batten, one side for a full length batten.  I have cut and pasted Glenn Cooks  comments below after looking at a picture of your sail on dilligaf racing.

I think the picture says it all, the sail is completely flat as a result of the full battens and would set much better with partial length battens.  For someone that sails regularly in light conditions I would even suggest that you build the sail with back to back top pockets with one partial length and one full length.  Then use the short batten in light air and also when course racing where you know that there are jib reaching legs.

Anyone with any information on this ? Have any of the boats there tried this set up . Thanks John

Nothing wrong with full length self tacker battens. They allow 'roach' down low if the sheeting position is effectively forward of the clew. They also protect the sail nicely when it is rolled up. As long as the battens are tapered and not too stiff  they will be fine in the light.

Don't they have different stiffness battens in the US? the top batten has to be the correct stiffness that it will form a shape even in light wind. If the batten is to stiff then it will hold the sail flat (with creases around the pocket). I would suggest trying a different sailmaker, putting a pocket on each side of the sail sounds like a silly idea.
