Terry B 70
Not the "lashings will continue until morale improves" kinda lashings Long story, but does anyone know someone who could do permanent lashings that 'look' seaman like on something similar to this exterior structure? Like most things, it's not my area of expertise............. The lashings are to hide the blue steel bracing that you can see in the connecting cross pieces (roughly the size you'd expect in a kid's playground swing set). It's meant to look like it's actually holding the structure together when in fact it's the steel doing the holding. The structure is going to be part of a small memorial in west Auckland. There's a (small) budget I believe to pay for the lashings and some time. Three lashings only. But a volunteer would be good! If so, please let me know and I'll pass your details (or someone you can put me on to) on to the people organising it. Ta in advance.
MarkMT 68
And there I was thinking it was going to be a post about ginger beer.
ScottiE 174
I just googled "lashing spars together" and got lots of images - good starting point. You are really just wanting to 'clad' the joint - so you could just try a 1/2 or 1/4 mock up on some plastic tube with el cheapo braid to see what looks good first and then as KM suggests involve the locat groups. I guess you could ask them to come up with the "best" design for the balance of the budget?
Island Time 1,211
Plenty of different options - do you have a copy of the ashley book of knots? Pic out the right one, follow the instructions, and it actually would hold the joint together! I know KM could do it, as could I, but not sure either of us wants to do it for free!! His idea of the local scouts is a good one!
Deep Purple 511
There's a guy that displays at coromandel markets that does all sorts of cool rope stuff. If I see him over the next few weeks there I'll grab his details.

Terry B 70
Just to finish this thread ....... here's a pic of the memorial with the rope work done by a crew.org man of good standing! I'm never sure whether to name people on these forums - privacy and all that - but the people concerned were very grateful - added a nice touch to it. Not sure how to add pics so hopefully this worked..........
Terry B 70
Clearly I've forgotten how to add images and can't see any info on the site about how to do it so y'all better imagine what a wondrous thing it was.........
