Any ideas on the best way to remove old sign writing from a painted surface?

Employ Taggers and turn it into "ART"

Is the sign writing stick on or painted. Stick on...use a hot air gun and peel. Painted....sand, undercoat the whole area and repaint.

it's stick on but it's like there is 2 layers, the first layer come off easy the second layer is hard to get off.

Hot air gun and a scraper is the only way. Don't get the surface too hot that you burn it and don't get your fingers in the way.

Eucalyptus oil is very good for cleaning up the left over sticky gluey gummy sh*t. It actually slightly dissolves it. Works on chewing gum/bubble gum too! You should be able to buy it at the supermarket. My aunt who runs a bookshop put me onto it - she uses it to take any unwanted labels off book covers.

I took all the old signwriting off my boat with a combination of heat gun and blade, eucalyptus oil and acetone.

Had the same issue - you think you have conquered it when the vinyl peels off but the adhesive has taken on a life of its own.

I ended up using a product called PrepSol which apparently the signwriters use. I had to really soak the adhesive with this product on a rag, then whip the rag away and scrape off what I could before it evaporated and the adhesive became difficult to shift again.

This was on a gelcoat surface so possibly more forgiving than your paint.

I would try Captain Haddock's eucalyptus first - this stuff was big on fumes - but keep that as a backup. And obviously test first on an inconspicuous area.

I found it sanded off ok. 60 grit on a round orby.

Simple old turps is the answer.

Soften the glue with plenty of turps, then srape it off with a stiff (non sratching) plastic blade. Turps can sometimes soften the vinyl to make the removal easier too.

I found turps to work pretty well too. But I soaked at least twice to really break down the glue. There was one other area where I applied Wolfie's method - much much faster if you don't mind a small repaint.

try acetone, though it may damage the paintwork underneath, I have used it for cleaning up alsorts, works well, do not leave any acetone soaked rag lying on anypainted surface

There is De-Solv-it. Sticky spot and Stain remover.

Natural citrus base. At most supermarkets. We have a 250ml bottle with press spray button in bottle top.

I've used it to get all sorts of sticky labels & tapes and associated "gunk" off.
