Rigid vangs

Recommended Posts

My current boat has no topping lift so I'm contemplating a rigid vang or boom kicker. Any recommendations? Not really into drilling into carbon mast so an alternative would be great. There's a nice great big pin at the mast step that heaps of blocks are attached to so this might be a key to it all.

that's almost exactly what I've been trying to come up with on my boat.  I was sketching things up using a single batten with ends glassed in. Didn't think of the slotted end at the boom - that's clever!  Reckon one would work on a T SD?

have you got lazy jacks Anthony? I use them on Voom to hold boom up, catches main nicely too, very handy for cruising with he family. might be easier than a vang?

not yet Ken but on the winter task list - along with about a 100 others!  about to infuse a boom plate for VB to pattern a cover to but wanted to jimmy something up in the mean time.  Need to also change the way the original lazy jack set up - attached to the spreaders which I'm a bit unconfortable with.  Had other more pressing things to worry about - like launching the bloody thing to enjoy some of the summer!

I just brought a r830 with one the like SD linked to. Will be a few weeks u til I can use it in anger to report on it, but previous owner seemed happy with it, he installed one on his last 2 boats, both 830's.

Get hold of Grant Genkins (Kiwi Rigging and ex- Grunt Machine) he made mine on The Bondi Tram. generally a bit cheaper than the mass produced ones and the finish is superb and he can do all the fiddly bits on the mast too (esp since yours is carbon).

It makes a massive difference when putting a reef in (especially short handed) and also gives the main much more shape in the light stuff.
