Empty marinas

The main reason I am selling the Marshall is Marina prices and I don't think I am the only one. I started off paying $550 a month at Bayswater 5 years ago, last I paid Westhaven was $920.. Crazy. Now renting privately...

I'm with smithy - I'm seriously thinking of selling as well - a major (but not the only) reason being marina costs. At Westhaven we now pay for power & water on top of the fees which used to cover these. And the fees have increased - albeit slightly for mine.

I looked at going back to a trailer sailor - had one I left rigged on the hard at Westhaven before I bought the keeler. But Westhaven doesn't have that option any more. And then I looked at both marinas closer to Waiheke (would suit a trailer sailor not bashing up the Waitemata against the sou'wester) to see what costs are for a trailer sailer on the hard - and they're double what I was paying 6 years ago at Westhaven - 1 was $300 month, the other dearer again.

My prediction? I think a lot of the smaller older boats will end up in the tip.

And there'll be a lot more partnerships. I see a few on Trade Me at the moment.

About the only way most of us can afford to own.

Sad, but times change -

Drop down to one of these,

DSCF1071.JPG

Fits in the back of a car, racing each weekend at various clubs around Auckland, Gulf Harbour, Quarry Lake, Westhaven, and at present Onehunga but back to Wattle Farm once the earthworks are completed, yep 2 lakes to race on will suit all wind directions.

A once a month regatta at Bayswater for all the Auckland clubs.

Northland champs, Auckland champs, BOP champs, North Harbour champs, North Island and National champs, 6hr race at Gulf Harbour, 5 hr race at Tauranga, even talks of a Biannual Interdoms.

And a kiwi finished 4th in the Worlds in France back in May.

Why is it that there are so many boats on marinas that never move from one month to the next when the fees are so high. We have some boats on our pontoon that have not moved for years and have a great crop of oysters growing on the bottom. What is the point of boat ownership with the associated costs if you never use the thing.

They must be paying their fees or the marina would remove them and put them on the hardstand until outstanding fees are payed.

Here's a little perspective:

All tide marina on South coast of Brittany - basically a sailing Mecca for racers... Awesome sailing, access to the Atlantic, a ton of places to go for overnight and longer trips. Sheltered, community owned (local body) marina up a tidal river. probably +500 boats up there, in a number of marinas and swing moorings, Grid and large ramps, scraping of boats on the grid etc...

12x4m slip with finger.

€1800...

per

YEAR...

i'm thinking that it's rather far from population centres, though?

Think of NZ. many (most?)  of the berths in Waikawa are used by CH CH and Canterbury boaties, Hamilton yachties use Tauranga, Whitianga, etc. for us in the North it is an hours drive to our berth in Whangarei etc. Not all have the luxury of a Westhaven or Sulphur point nearby.

IF i'm racing on a wednesday night I'm lucky if the drive to the marina is less than a hour, invairably more. Another of the joys of living in Auckland Town

sure. but berths at those marinas are quite a lot cheaper than the (relatively) central akl ones...
