If you looking using an outboard instead inboard I would consider a long shaft 15hp Yamaha or any well known brand, stay away from things like parsons etc and go new,2nd hand who knows what abuse it has had,new in most cases is not much more, charge system  4 stroke  ,need a decent bracket that you can adjust easily.

what is wrong with inboard as cost of o/b may fix inboard?

Shane has no money, so no point in suggesting 1700 or something new. Shane is going to need a bargain basement price for something.

The problem is Shane, you are likely to get something that is going to give more trouble than good and they are expensive things to get serviced.
And can you simply hang the outboard on the Transom? or are you going to need some kind of mounting bracket? which happen to be expensive also. Then you have the cost of Petrol and two stroke oil and then you have the issue of it going stale of you don't use it much.
You are also probably going to need to look for a long shaft outboard.

Did you find out what is wrong with the Diesel engine?

Shane, forget the outboard idea. Hanging an outboard off the stern of your boat is not going to be easy. Put the money into fixing the engine. You have not yet said if you have had someone take a look at it for you.
AND PLEASE REPLY to our messages here. It is so confusing to us all when we don't hear from you, you say one thing and then next we hear you are doing something different.
Another possible job to for you, if you are still in Waikawa. Go see Aaron at Oddies. He was down two staff, but has had one new guy start in the last few weeks, but may still have another position available. Could also be worth popping you head into Burnsco as well.
Oh and also go and see the local Boat Painting place at the Marina as well. In fact, just go poke your head into every business there and ask. You may get lots of no's, but don't take that personally. If there is not a position, then Businesses will say no, it's just a fact of life. But Business Owners like those that take the opportunity to look and ask.
