Island Time 1,235
Depends on which buildings your talking about. The 2.5k for our berth levy is the total cost for the berth. The berths are owned by the body corporate, and they are run on a cost recovery basis. It's actually been going down lately! The house body corps vary quite a bit, so you have to check anything your interested in carefully, and what the fees cover. I think ours is very good value. It has been going up though, as we've just put a proper maintenance plan in place. So, for us, for about 10k a year, we get the marina berth, and a house, fully maintained and insured etc. Commuting to Auckland would be a pain though, unless the ferries suit. Black Panther 1,584
No but some are up to 7k pa. If you work downtown the ferry is the solution.
Island Time 1,235
Actually, some are up around 20k pa. Even that can be OK depending what it includes. If it's a 2mill property, then 20 k pa fully maintained, with a large berth, is still reasonably good. How much on average do most spend on maintenance on an expensive house? IMO, you get the berth for almost free
Addem 95
I've done both and think the convenience of the marina is worth it. I'm about to pop down to the boat to do 1/2 hour job. It used to be a 1/2 day effort.
darkside 61
Marina every time now. But then I use my boat as an apartment on average one night a week. I live at the Mount but work is in Penrose. I keep the boat in HMB and justify the cost as being about the same as a decent hotel in Auckland once a week. I know where I'd rather stay especially with the Eberspacher humming tonight. Still when we lived aboard it was quite different. We were much happier on the hook and only used marinas when we had to.
muzled 140
For now I'm happy on the marina but then the cost of that rules out doing other stuff like a winter holiday in Fiji etc. Is that trade off worth it? I'm not sure longterm, but currently yes. There was a mooring up at Herald Island on TM for $30/week a while back, that's a whole lot less than the marina. (and one of the more sheltered spots from the wind). The GH apartment with marina setup is interesting, especially once retired.
cj! 19
Both voting choices assume the desire/need for a marina. I'm ok with a mooring and can always pay to use a marina short term if required but then again I'd really rather be cruising and on the hook than stuck in town if I could.
