chariot 242
Does an EPIRB fitted close to a bulkhead compass, maybe within 300mm, have any adverse affect on the compass reading.
Island Time 1,211
Potentially yes. Min safe distance 0.5m for most compasses and electric things. But you can test it easy enough
gert 3
I just bought an epirb for my new boat, and I placed it at various positions and distances from the compass. Once I got within +/-30cm I could see the compass move. I decided to mount it on the other side of the companionway.
chariot 242
Thanks for that. Problem is if i move to the other side of companionway it will be too easily knocked by the first mate in the galley. Should still get 0.5m on same side as compass.
erice 732
as stated try the epirb at various mounting spots and watch the compass ideally, double the distance where it has the smallest movement ie distance that only just registers compass movement 15cm mount distance at least 30cm bigger, better compoasses have corrector magnets but very few amateurs could be trusted to adjust them perfectly
