NOR (I hope I am not breaking any rules here Squid!)

 

The Waikato Yacht Squadron 100 Miler will be held on 27–28 February 2010, starting at 1000 hrs NZDT on Saturday, 27th February 2010, from the Maraetai Beach Boating Club.

The race shall be governed by the ISAF 2009–2012 Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of Yachting New Zealand (YNZ), the rules of individual yacht classes (except as any of these are altered by the Notice of Race or Sailing Instructions), the Sailing Instructions and by this Notice of Race. The event is classified as Category C for advertising (See ISAF Regulation 20).

 

Eligibility

Entries are open to Keelboats and Trailer Yachts of greater than 5.95 metres length overall. All skippers must be a member of a club affiliated to Yachting New Zealand. The minimum crew is two persons (including the skipper) over the age of 16 years.

Entries from trailer yachts of 5.95 metres or less in overall length will be considered on a case-bycase basis provided that the entry is received by the closing date.

 

Safety Regulations

All yachts shall carry, but not be limited to, a marine VHF transceiver, fitted with channels 16, 77, 80 & 82 and available for use at all times. All yachts shall carry Chart NZ 532 Approaches to Auckland. It is strongly recommended that Chart NZ 5324 also be carried.

A yacht sailing two-handed shall be fitted with jackstays pursuant to Clause 7.23 (e) of the YNZ Safety Regulations Part II (Offshore & Coastal Racing & Cruising) and two safety harnesses pursuant to SR Appendix 4 of YNZ Safety Regulations Part II (Offshore & Coastal Racing & Cruising).

Racing Rule 52 is amended to permit the use of self-steering devices.

All yachts shall, upon request, make themselves available for inspection for compliance with safety regulations. A yacht may also be inspected after the race.

Safety Regulations for Trailer Yachts — All Trailer Yacht Designs must be approved by the New Zealand Trailer Yacht Association (NZTYA) and shall comply with the Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations Part V — Trailer Yachts — Category A. These regulations take precedence over individual class rules.

Safety Regulations for Keelboats — All Keelboats shall comply with Category 4 of the Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations Part II — Offshore & Coastal Racing & Cruising with the exception that a life raft or dinghy is not required.

 

Divisions

Burnsco Division A: Trailer Yachts Long Haul

Shall be open to all Trailer Yachts with a NZTYA rating of greater than 0.8250.

Division Flag: Orange.

It is intended that this division shall sail Course 1.

 

Crombie Lockwood Division B: Trailer Yachts Short Haul

Shall be open to all Trailer Yachts.

Division Flag: Blue.

It is intended that this division shall sail Course 2.

 

Auto Trail Division C: Trailer Yachts Sprint – No Extras

Shall comprise all trailer yachts, no spinnakers or gennakers. Only a single headsail may be flown at any one time.

Division Flag: Black.

It is intended that this division shall sail Course 3.

 

Pine Harbour Electrical Division D: Keelboats Long Haul

Shall be open to all Keelers.

Division Flag: Green.

It is intended that this division shall sail Course 1.

 

Prior to the start of their division each entrant shall fix a divisional flag measuring 200 mm by200 mm to their backstay or starboard shroud.

The Race Committee reserves the right to cancel any Division with less than three entries. Yachts entered in that Division will have the option of transferring to a another division.

Courses

The courses described herein shall be sailed in either an anti-clockwise direction (Port Course) or a clockwise direction (Starboard Course), depending on wind direction. The direction to be sailed shall be identified by the Committee Boat flying a red flag (Port Course) or a green flag (Starboard Course).

 

Port Course 1 — approximately 85 miles

Start at Maraetai Beach, sail north though the Waiheke Channel, through Ruthe Passage leaving Ponui Island to starboard, to Cow Island leaving it to port, to Flat Rock (Kawau Island) to port, sailing south through Whangaparaoa Passage leaving Tiri Tiri Matangi Island to port, south through the Rangitoto Channel leaving Rangitoto and Motutapu Islands to port, and sailing east in the Tamaki Strait leaving Motuihe Island to port, to the finish line at Maraetai.

 

Port Course 2 — approximately 65 miles

Start at Maraetai Beach, sail north though the Waiheke Channel, through Ruthe Passage leaving Ponui Island to starboard, to Cow Island leaving it to port,, to the Rakino Channel leaving Waiheke Island to port, to the Rangitoto Channel leaving Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands to port, and sailing east in the Tamaki Strait leaving Motuihe Island to port, to the finish line at Maraetai.

 

Port Course 3— approximately 30 miles.

Start at Maraetai Beach, sail east in the Tamaki Strait, to the Sandspit Passage, sail north in the Firth of Thames to Ruthe Passage keeping Ponui Island to port, sail south though the Waiheke Channel, west through the Tamaki Strait to Navy Buoy leaving it to port, to the finish line at Maraetai.

(Approx position of Navy Buoy: lat, 36-49.9 S long, 174-54.7E)

 

Alternative Course (Course 4) — approximately 75 miles.

In the event of extreme weather conditions an Inner Harbour course may be sailed.

From the start at Maraetai, to Browns Island leaving it to port to Northern Leading Beacon leaving it to starboard, to the Tamaki Strait leaving Motuihe Island to port to the Waiheke Channel to Pakatoa Island leaving it to starboard to Sandspit Passage leaving Rotoroa Island to starboard to the Waiheke Channel leaving Ponui Island to starboard to Pakatoa Island leaving it to starboard to Sandspit Passage to the finish at Maraetai. This course may be shortened for any Division depending upon weather conditions.

 

NOTE: All yachts shall identify their position to Auckland Volunteer Coast Guard using VHF

channel 80 or 82 after passing designated waypoints identified in the Sailing Instructions.

 

Registration

A Registration Desk will be located in the upstairs lounge at the Maraetai Beach Boating Club. All skippers (or a skipper’s representative) are required to sign the register and confirm entry details with the Race Committee Secretary at the Registration Desk between 1830hrs and 2100hrs on Friday 26th February 2010.

If you cannot attend the Briefing, you are still required to sign the register and confirm your entry details with the Race Committee Secretary at the Registration Desk between 0800hrs and 0900hrs on Saturday 27th February 2010. Upon acknowledging your own responsibility for safety by signing a disclaimer of responsibility on Waikato Yacht Squadron Inc., you will be issued with the final copy of the Sailing Instructions.

Should you attempt to participate in the race without completing this formality your result will be recorded as DNS (Did Not Start).

 

Briefing

The pre-race briefing will be held in the upstairs lounge at the Maraetai Beach Boating Club

commencing at 2100 hrs NZDT Friday 26th February 2010 to familiarize participants with the course and hazards to safe navigation.

Attendance at the briefing is strongly recommended for all skippers and crew.

 

Water Taxi

A complimentary water taxi will be available for entrants anchored off Maraetai. Call the driver on VHF Channel 77.

 

Ratings

Corrected times for trailer yachts shall be calculated from current ratings published by the NZTYA.

For designs where rating information has not been supplied during the past two seasons, the Race Committee reserves the right to assign a rating and Race Division for these entrants. The Race Committee also reserves the right to refuse any entry and to amend the rating of any yacht whose hull, spars or sails have been altered from class rules or, where class rules are non-existent, from approved designs.

Keelboats will be assigned WYS ratings. Club Handicaps and PHRF ratings (where applicable) shall be supplied on the entry form.

The Race Committee's decision on ratings shall be final and no discussion will be entered into. Prizes

Race prizes shall be awarded for line honours and the first three places on corrected time in each division. There will also be a prize for the best two handed result in each div. Additional prizes for corrected time placings may also be awarded. No yacht or skipper shall be eligible for more than one race prize.

Club Challenge Trophies

There are again two Challenge Trophies for Interclub Competition — one for keelers and one for trailer yachts. These trophies are open to any Club affiliated to Yachting New Zealand. The winning club will have the best four results from any boat in their club as declared on their entry form. The low point scoring system (Appendix A Rule A4 of the Racing Rules) shall apply.

 

Spot Prizes

All skippers and crewmembers participating in the race shall be entered in a draw for spot prizes. No skipper or crewmember shall be eligible for more than one spot prize.

TO WIN A SPOT PRIZE, YOU MUST ATTEND THE PRIZEGIVING FUNCTION.

The prize giving shall commence at 1000 hrs NZDT on Sunday 28th February 2010 unless otherwise announced on VHF Radio Channel 77 at 0930hrs on Sunday 28th February 2010.

 

Entries

Entries shall only be accepted on the Official Entry Form supplied with this Notice of Race.

Entries shall be mailed to reach the secretary by Friday 19th February 2010 accompanied by an entry fee of $45.00.

Late Entries

Late entries shall be received at the Shore Base in the Maraetai Beach Boating Club, but only for yachts that conform to class rules or approved design and have a current NZTYA, WYS rating, PHRF rating or individual Club Handicap. These must be received before 1930 hrs NZDT on 26th February 2010 and will incur an additional fee of $15.00. No exceptions will be entertained.

 

Sailing Instructions

A draft copy of the Sailing Instructions will be emailed (or mailed) upon receipt of entry. A final version will be made available at the briefing. This document provides important information for all participants. Please read it carefully before starting.

 

CANCELLATION

In the event that the Race Officer cancels or abandons the event on the day of the race for any reason whatsoever, Waikato yacht Squadron shall be under no obligation to refund the entry fee.
