He was stabbed while two men tried to steal the backpack on his back. A long rusty blade was used and it was the blade getting jammed between two ribs that stopped it from penetrating deeper and making the wound much more serious.
They are trying to get him home ASAP to get proper medical treatment. But it sounds like the guy has had such a terrible scare, he is too scared to leave his Hotel room.

Two men attacked Bethune on Wednesday morning (local time) in the port city of Santana, Brazil.

One of the men lunged at him with a knife, while a second attacked from behind.

A fight ensued, lasting several minutes, and Bethune was knifed in his chest

looks like he made the same mistake? as blake

but was luckier

parts of the world have always been no-go areas for un-escorted tourists

and you have to have pre-thought out your response to being 'asked' for your stuff

unfortunately governments don't advertise these areas

but generally if you ask

people will tell you

fortunately not too many in nz

just certain streets, at certain times

a couple of years ago

young asians were being targeted for their phones

in auckland parks, car park stairwells, even queen st

Not good.

However he should still be in jail in Guatemala for man slaughter of Japan for causing a collision in the Southern Ocean.

Perhaps his luck is running out.

I am currently living/working in Brazil, have done so for the last 10 yrs.
It has many great points but it is a violent society, guns everywhere.
Approx 60,000 murders per annum (and a road toll of around 40,000).
I have been to Macapa a few times, certainly not a city you would walk around at night, day time ok as long as you keep out of the no go √°reas.
Bethune's attack could have just been a case of wrong place/wrong time, or maybe people did not like him snooping around - the bush telegraph works just as effectively in Brazil as anywhere else and he would not exactly blend in.

Wow.
What is the population number?

200 million
I will not drive on the open road at night, road conditions in my state, MG, are very bad, and there are a multitude of large trucks on the road mostly driven by drugged up crazies. The highway to my wife's home town, about 250km away, is referred to as the "Estrada de Morte", ie road of death. When we travel to/From there I leave about 11.00am. This means most of our travelling time is when people have stopped for lunch.
Just renewed my drivers licence, for the initial issue you have to take a psychological test - we always joke it is to see if you are crazy enough to drive here.
