WTF no harness

Recommended Posts

Yup, and worse than that, the guy who fell in came off the end of a whisker pole that he had apparently gone out on to free a line, without a tether and without telling the helmsman what he was doing.

Isn't the wisker pole used on the leeward side? I.e. The side the waves come down.

I'd sack that crewman. Not telling the helm what he was up to, that's basic crew communication...

David Witt comes across as the type of person who doesn't suffer fools very well.

The guy that went over will be hoping they don't lose the leg by 5 miles...

To be fair, I used the term from my recollection of watching the video a day or so earlier and it was the idea that stuck in my mind not the actual word. He might have said jockey pole or something else.

Whisker pole / jockey pole, the name doesn't really matter. These guys are using a short pole off the leeward side, near the back of the boat to get wider sheeting angles on zero's / FRO's / what ever sails they are running with.

The point I was making is that to go out on a pole, on the leeward side without a harness or lifejacket of some sort is just bat-sh*t crazy.

At best, these poles are covered in spray and just above the wave action. It doesn't take much for those poles to be in the waves. They aren't spinnaker poles mounted a wee way up the mast clear of wave action....
