Leg 7 Start

Recommended Posts

So what will the start of leg 7 leaving Auckland serve up?

Colville Channel broke a boat in the last race here. Channel Is is currently 40 gusting 45, with a SE swell of 3 m forecast. Should be 'bouncy bouncy' through there, and with the wind on the nose. Hehe.

The start in the harbour will be interesting, with 15 knts straight down the harbour, Will be interesting seeing those big boats beat to windward in such a narrow ditch, narrowed further by the spectator boat areas. They are big boats to tack quickly in an enclosed space...

Following that, I expect it will be an on the wind slog to East Cape until a bear away to reach around the high sitting over the Chathams...

Official commentary was interesting....... :wtf:

Like they go straight from North Head to East Cape?

Just miss the whole Cape Colville / Colville Channel?

Mixing up all the names of the islands, not knowing the course or number of buoys to round up the North Shore...

I was actually really pissed off with the whole 'live' coverage. They had pre-prepared replays up to 2 minutes from the start. They only show a shot for about 3 seconds and then cut to another 3 second shot, just after you've managed to focus on it.

I wasn't even sure I had  the live coverage, was worried I'd clicked on a link to a previous video...

16 degree water temperature..... browns became whites Island and there was the other one out the back of Rangitoto he couldnt remember the name of.

Is that a halyard or a fore-stay?

Auckland looking bloody magnificent with a great fleet of spectators and the best city in the world turning it on today.

Just forward of the beam romp up the East Coast Bays and a righty smack into 20 plus to Colville.

What more do you need.

Scallywag has set a course for Hawai. They are heading north of Cuvier, while everyone else is down towards the Mercs.

That guys is a tool (David Witt). Stated he is either going to "win the leg or break the boat trying".

Every other skipper was talking about the power of the Southern Ocean, the responsibility for the crew and for the boat, and how careful you need to be down there, because of the extreme remoteness of where they are going.

Before the start of Leg 1 he was mouthing off about all the bullshit safety gear they need to carry these days, and how he has no idea what half or it is for.

This guy has already had a man overboard without an LJ, wearing only black. Found him by good luck and in benign weather. It would be really fun now for him to loose the rig and spend two months drifting to Patagonia with an a tiny jury rig.

Aussies...

Looks like Brunel might have been reading our posts about Kuaotunu icecreams and have set course for a quick pit stop.

Yep Mapfre and Scallywag took the safe option outside the Mercs.
All the rest went through the gap then ended up close to Mayor Island.

Currently they are tacking around Waihau/ Hicks/ East Cape.
Could be some passing opportunities there.

That Aussie skipper is a character.  Said his is the only boat with no Kiwis on board, and he likes it that way!

Perhaps that is why he is currently in last place........?
