Re Galvanising CQR Anchor

Thats devious, why not suggest to her that you are getting the anchor done, telling her that this place also recoats frying pans and get her to pay for the lot.

Lads lads, you have to make them think you are looking out for them all the way.

Many senarios would fit this one. But you could attack this kind of situation like this. "Oh Honey, someone has suggested a company that can recoat that really expensive pan for you. I have been told they do great work, but just to be sure, I thought I would take my rusty old anchor in and try it first as a test and see what kind of job they can really do. I would feel so bad if your beautiful pan was completely wrecked by these guys, but i reallyu don;t mind what happens with that old anchor.

And that gentlemen, is how it's done. Patronising, but it'll work!

Maybe I could run a few seminars when I come to Auckland.

A week seminar.

Monday... "Woman can do everything!" (and so they should...do everything)

Tuesday..."Why my marriage licence was the best 50 bucks I ever spent"

Wednesday..."Tell her what you really think!....once she's out of ear shot"

Thursday.. AM..."How to wear the Pants in your relationship" Morning workshop

PM..."Your Hospital Stay" Afternoon workshop discussing medical removal of pants and several other items

Friday......"Marriage! a realationship where one person has to always be right...."and the other is the Husband

Saturday AM... Understanding why Men die younger than Woman. (usually because they want to

PM...Mens support workshop....Please bring your own glass as there are no woman to do the washing up at the end of it. (My mistake, I forgot about the consequence of a mens only seminar)

Surely the real life "Acid Test" will be how quickly she delivers the anchor, and later pays and collects said anchor, and then siezes the anchor to chain, checks warp flaking and makes sure bitter end is fast, stows the anchor back on board, pumps bilges whilst on board, removes rubbisb and empties, whilst you are attending the mandatory briefings, sailing committee and protest meetings.

Well speaking of electrocuting the Galv to the anchor, Do you guys know you can do it yourself for a few bucks.

Electroplating with Zinc

Electrolytic zinc-plating can be performed with reasonable ease.

The preparations involve making zinc chloride (zinc + HCL), making ammonium chloride (ammonia + HCL), etching the plating target slightly, then applying low voltage to both the “donor” zinc anode and the “target” metallic workpiece with both immersed in electrolyte solution made from water, zinc chloride and ammonium chloride. The results are easily achieved

With a slight modification, it can be used to apply a pattern of zinc to a larger piece of copper to produce a decorative pattern of brass.

Materials needed:

Hydrochloric (Muriatic) Acid at about 30%

10% “janitorial strength”, non-sudsy plain ammonia

A block of Zinc anode

Nitrile gloves

Respirator mask, Glasses/Goggles,

Ventilated work area that can withstand moderate chemicals

Steps in the preparation:

A. Prepare the Zinc Chloride

1. Pour a small quantity of muriatic acid into a suitable vessel (ceramic or Glass then slowly add little bits (pinches) of the zinc granules to the acid until it stops dissolving. Undissolved zinc at the bottom of the vessel assures you have converted all the SN to SnCl2. (No tasting and certainly do not rub your eyes.)

B. Prepare the Ammonium Chloride

I am not sure if it is avilable in NZ, but makers of Stained Glass windows sometimes use Amonium Chlroide to clean the Soldering Iron tips.

But, otherwise, in the spirit of DIY: Pour ammonia in non-reactive (glass) container, then SLOWLY drip HCL (muriatic acid) into it, you will make ammonium chloride. Think “reverse double-boiler”, since the reaction is exothermic, okay?

DO NOT BREATH THE FUMES OF THE AMMONIA!!!

The “white smoke demo” is fun and the odd fun Science teacher at High school used to do this "trick" and full the school with whie smoke, but i can imagine they wouldn't be allowed to anymore.

To make a long story short, if you combine 30 parts (always by weight!) of zinc chloride with 120 parts of ammonium chloride with 1000 parts of water, you’ve got a workable solution for electroplating zinc. Add some (say 5% of total solution weight) of a glycol (like anti-freeze), and you’ get a bright zinc finish… if you don’t apply more current that is needed (say 400 milliamps to 1200 milliamps at less than 12 volts).

Time equals coating thickness as well as maintaining the level of Zinc in the mixture.

and yeah OK, maybe it ain't so easy.

Zinc is Galv, or I should say Galv is Zinc. Zinc plated is done electricaly, Galv is hot dipped.

Galvanization comes from a term to "electric shock" to produce twitches in frogs legs carried out by a dude called Galvani, several years before even Squid was born. However, over the years, protecting Iron from rusting, or "galvanic corrosion by treating the surface with Zinc has changed the meaning to what we have today. The process of Hot dip causes the Zinc to anneal itself to the Iron and the two become molecularly bonded. Electric galvanizing or Zinc plating, is molecularly bonded also, but due to an exhange of ions.

Oh Oh cunning plan. Tell the missus you are getting her frypan re coated so she can continue to produce food just like Gordon Ramsy, as she it that good (yes, some may need to work on their bluffing skills with that) and when you drop her pan in let your anchor fall out of the car at the same time

Waiting on the coating prop answer?

The only problem with the Frypan plan is Murphy will step in and when you go to pick it up the Frypans Galv and the Anchor is teflon
