The key is that the skipper was found guilty and fined. That makes a private prosecution by the other boat (or insurer) much more likely, so they’ll get the 55k off them too.

I must be wrong as I thought MNZ only delt with commercial vessels? Recreational is the harbour master? $1700 for a $55k boat, insurance having to pickup the rest?

Mnz have prosecuted several private skippers, they have responsibility for all marine events.
