Kick Ass 47
How does the gst and duties work on a boat that was built and used in nzd until 2002 then exported to aus and then import back to nz some time later. Would duties and gst be payable? And what is the most economical way to ship a boat back to nz?
Boatworks 23
GST is generally payable in these circumstances, duty would generally not be if boat was built in NZ
Black Panther 1,566
How can gst be payable if it has already been paid?
SloopJohnB 323
Unless the GST was claimed back at time of export.
Priscilla II 375
"And what is the most economical way to ship a boat back to nz?" Sail it.
Island Time 1,211
Sail it. If you can prove it was exported, there will be no gst or duty for it to return...
Kick Ass 47
When you factor time off work is sailing it cheaper? Waiting for the right weather window could end up a few weeks off work plus getting the boat to cat 1 before it leaves.
Clipper 343
Ask Raz88 - he brought Tazzy Devil over from Aus a couple of years ago
Black Panther 1,566
Pay a delivery skipper? Mind you the Tasman in winter sucks. Could you wait a bit?
Clipper 343
Why has no one asked what boat you are looking at???
Black Panther 1,566
What boat are you looking at? There.
ex TL systems 63
We bought a cat in Australia and sailed it here from Bundaberg in September really easy trip other than last 2 days. Should not have to pay duty etc if you can prove it was built here.
Jon 355
If you register it in Nz or elsewhere before you leave you won’t need Cat 1 ?? What boat is it. (Twice now)
ex TL systems 63
You don’t need cat one to leave Australia unless you are racing. For cruising it is skippers responsibility have what is needed without being inspected.
Priscilla II 375
Shipping costs can be greatly reduced if you can unbolt the keel as you see with newly imported sail boats.
Kick Ass 47
Looking at E1050 Kick which im sure alot of you would remember. My dad used to race on her in the 90’s
Black Panther 1,566
I have no idea on shipping costs but for $500 per day plus expenses I could do it (or IT) but I'm getting old and grumpy and wouldn't do it in winter.
Clipper 343
Cool boat! I was interested in her 12 months ago when we were looking, but she sold. Nice cockpit layout and aft cabin
Boatworks 23
Sail it. If you can prove it was exported, there will be no gst or duty for it to return... I am not sure this is correct (unless it’s the same owner bringing it in who originally exported it). My understanding is, new owner = GST payable (regardless if GST has already been paid once). If it was built and sailed from new in NZ, and you can prove that, there should be no duty.
