Stainless bolts into alloy

Recommended Posts

Having taken apart our steering pedestal to replace the bearings I'm now (thankfully and after a lot of swearing) at the reassembly stage. Both the top and bottom assemblies are held into the aluminium casing by stainless bolts which had obviously had some sort of greasey gunk in there as some sort of corrosion barrier (I guess). They are all clean now and I was going to use lanocote to coat the bolts before I reassemble.

The question is, am I using the right stuff? Is there something better I should use to stop any issues with alloy and stainless together? The overriding consideration on this job is that I never ever want to take this f**king thing apart again, so need to plan ahead now to avoid any issues!

Plus one for TefGel just got some from Burnsco  30g syringe tube  $36.99 Incl GST with membership card, the full whack is $ 39.99 so not cheap but will last longer than my other favorite Lanocote in that pedestal application.

Tefgel is good, but lanoline is as good as anything for issolating threads etc., you don't have to buy lanocote or other expensive CRC products. Just contact a wool scourer and they will supply it in bulk. I bought a 20l container of it. probably cost the price of a couple of little pots of Tefgel. it does smell a little sheepy, but does an excellent job.

Never heard of Tefgel before. I have used the black, thick stuff used in Scandinavia to protect car under-sides against corrosion. It is cheap and has worked just fine for me. A car safety inspection guy told me the other year lindseed oil does the job. I have not tried it.

Then something like Molykote P-40 might be worth investigating.

In the assembly manual for the M32 cat, Aston Harald recommends Molykote 1000 for the beam bolts. This is a different application though: stainless steel bolts in all cabon beams and hulls.
