Search was called off about an hour ago due to darkness. Doesn't look good, though at least it's not cold. Incident reportedly happened about 5 miles out.

Seems a little pessimistic that the CYC statement is already talking about him in the past tense...

Santorelli had more than a decade of offshore racing experience, and was a core member of the Imedi Racing team as well as the greater Chicago sailing community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and teammates.

Some more details from the club commodore at a press conference this morning... he was moving toward the stern to make a routine sail adjustment when "a large wave hit the boat causing him to slip into the water". He was wearing an inflatable PFD but the crew have reported that it failed to inflate. Flotation devices were thrown "in very close proximity" to him but he was unable to reach them and was seen to slip below the water.

I'm from Chicago. These are not unfamiliar conditions (2+ meter seas), but they are not particularly common.

Also, the air might be warm but the lake is 900ft/280m deep and it does not warm up. Surface temps are around 65ºF/18ºC right now (https://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/glcfs.php?lake=m&ext=swt&type=N&hr=36 sidenote: I really miss having a gov't that obsessively tracks this data; NOAA is amazing)

We used to go by the 50-50-50 rule: 50 minutes in 50 degree water (that's 10ºC) means a 50% chance of survival.

Lot of sailing deaths this year. Be safe out there, folks.

I know what you mean.  Having spent more than 2 decades in the US I too miss that government information availability.  Interestingly I have, with poking around, found there is a whole heap collected here in NZ but the big difference is no government agency (local or national) seems to proactively put anything they have collected out there for the public.  They all try to hide behind a 'user pays' or 'register before we show you' or even worse a 'we'll tell you if you file a FOIA request' curtain.  The US philosophy of your taxes paid for us to collect it so we'll make sure you can see/use it if you want to is much more enlightened and transparent.
