Fish 0
I've let me Boating NZ subscription expire. They don't even change the ads, nothing new to look at. I used to browse the yachts for sale in the back, now it is fizz boats. Damn those things are expensive for what you get. I do enjoy the British yachting magazines, Yachting World and Yachting Monthly, both available from Boat Books at Westhaven. They have good articles, columns from interesting people etc. The ads aren't that relevant to NZ though. The Yachting Monthly has an article every month to buy a particular type of second hand boat for a certain budget, i.e. $80k pounds for an 80's fibreglass boat to sail around the world, or $30k pounds for something to cruise the English Channel and Channel Islands, etc. It probably helps that I've sailed there a fair bit, but even for keeping up with international trends and news, its good. chariot 243
Boating NZ has been going backwards for some time or at least since the new editor took over.
Fish 0
Did I mention that in yacht reviews, Yachting World actual saw what they don't like about a new boat? A refreshing change from the regurgitated marketing love fest Boating NZ offer up. I think the BNZ reviews copy and paste the same superlatives from review to review. There is no objectivity at all. About the only use of the reviews is the boats vital stats, length beam and weight etc, but half the time they don't even give a price, which is about as useful as tits on a bull. Yachting World even review boats that aren't from the big name mass production yards. They also list similar designs / options. Gives a real opportunity to see some innovative thinking, alternative designs, and something that doesn't have a plumb bow, chines, twin rudders and a garage for a jet tender... i.e. they actually review sailors yachts...
smithy09 50
A big difference with the UK publications is that they will pay good money for good articles, hence contributions by people who really know stuff like Rod Heikel. I wrote a few articles for practical Boat owner when I was living on board in the Med and it was good money!! As Fish says, they also point out things they don't like in boats and publish really gritty stories like the Cheeky Rafiki story and the Big Oyster that lost its keel in the med. Great gear reviews and practical stuff like anchoring.. I read them too and dispair at Boating NZ...
darkside 61
I subscribe to Yachting World and some issues I'll read 70% of it. Not cheap but comfortably the best all round sailing magazine for what I want. My wife wrote a few articles on our circumnavigation for Boating NZ, home schooling, Red Sea and other destination stuff back during Rebecca Hayter's first stint. You don't see much of that content now. I guess most people follow blogs for that info now.
ballystick 72
Despite all the other stuff, I really like the articles by John MacFarlane, really interesting and often full of great technical advice.
Priscilla II 392
Just cycled by the new stink pot sales berth at Westhaven and 3 of the largest and most probably expensive ones have got sold stickers. Also keel on day at Pier 21 for several of the ugliest box looking yachts I have ever seen. Crikey they do not even have lead keels is there a world wide shortage or something. Reflects the content of Boating NZ and in fairness maybe thats their intended market. I wait for my buddy who is way wealthier to hand me his copies of Yachting World and agree it is a quality product.
