Crazyhorse 47
Anyone ever converted a small 2stroke outboard to external Tank? A couple of trips around the harbour and its time to fill up again and as usual, there's a chop and a sou'wester so fuel everywhere. Tried siphon fillers, same prob. Got a 12v pump which works but then we have to cart that about in the ding. It's a Merc 2.5 so I am assuming the engine itself wouldn't create enough vaccume when running to draw fuel up from an external tank?
Ex Machina 365
https://youtu.be/ZS0sn46-ITQ i looked at doing the same to a yammy 2hp and was going to do what the dude in the video has done
Crazyhorse 47
Yep, saw that Cazzate, let me know how it goes? The trouble I see is it wont work with a tender, the fuel tank has to be higher than the outboard tank as its gravity fed? although would be good for a laugh for others watching me going along with a fuel tank sitting on a frame above the dinghy! To run in a small tender it still needs a fuel pump which defeats the purpose because you then need a power supply to run it. One way I have been thinking would work would be to have a hand operated air pump on the external fuel tank? Pump the tank up then fuel would flow happily into the outboard tank, "up hill" and the needle and seat should still work with the added pressure so not flood the engine. Ex Machina 365
I sold the motor to help fund cat 3 so never got there . I did come across the topic on an American forum where someone did the exact same thing and apparently the vacuum from the tank on the motor sets up siphon that sucks fuel from the tote tank . Also tne dude reckoned it only took 10-15 or so pumps from tne primer to fill the tank on the outboard but you have to crack the cap a bit to let air out

Worth a try as trying to fill a tank when it runs out in 1m waves during a sou'wester ain't my idea of fun!?
