Does my prod need a bob-stay?

Recommended Posts

I've put a carbon prod on my old Javelin and am wondering whether I can get away without a bob-stay. The prod is the bottom section of a 49er mast which is 64mmOD and 3.5mm wall thickness.

Does anyone have any experience with what sort of size the prod sections are when unstayed in the Javelin fleet (their Google Groups site doesn't seem to be used much)?

Cheers,

Chris

I would guess you would be fine in the 49er mast section.

Most of the 12 foot skiff prods that have a bob stay are a 38mm section, so a lot thinner than a mast section.

You need to make sure where it meets the bow is strong enough, and possibly reinforce the mast section where it enters the sleeve in the boat.

Remember it’s a big lever, so if say the prods a metre long, and the bit where it enters the boats is 100mm, it’s a 10:1 lever. Add a 200kg pull up from the tack of the kite and you are dealing with 2 tons at the boat
