Heavy autopilot

Recommended Posts

Hi

Trying to work out what is considered to be to heavy drag on B&G autopilot hydraulic ram.

Does anyone have a contact for checking this? Or tips

Thinking solenoid might be dodgy however it does engage and disengage.

Compared to a similar setup on boat next door it is a sh*t load heavier to move.

Cheers

Sounds like the solenoid is not opening correctly, or wrong fluid. Do you hear a solid click when engaging? Noise should be short and sharp. How old is the unit? What oil is in it?

If you weren't aware, I'm a B&G certified tech...

What is the Amp draw on clutch engage (magnetic coil?)

Excess resistance can be mechanical in the steering (take the ram off, check for steering resistance), or the ap drive. Fluid restrictions (damaged, kinked or de-laminating hoses), blocked or sticking valve block, magnetic coil not providing sufficient power to operate the valve properly etc. This is not an electrical motor issue. If the helm has normal resistance with the ram off, the issue is the connection, or the hydraulics. They would have to be removed and inspected....

Yup ram off its free as a bird.

Rest is all good.

Will remove ram and take to hydraulic fixer to check.

Not sure of relay amp draw as yet but guessing not that because it's in a non energised state when not in use so must deduct from that the valve is sticky maybe... Assuming the solenoid only works one way and spring internally returns valve to bypass.
