ynot 45 Posted February 1, 2019 Share Posted February 1, 2019 So anyway found hansen valve leaking through the shaft behind the blue handle... Just so happens it was the poo pipe outlet. Decided to change it in the water... No biggie just a bit of water in the boat. But! Went through the plan something like this. Remove pipe.... Yuk floaty bits. Unscrew valve. Push emergency tapered wood bung in hole.... Most boats have these. Thread tape refit new valve! Easy. Not Found skin fitting had ribs on the inside which would not let tapered wooden plug tap in and rufly seal the hole... Bugger lots of ocean in the boat with the floaty bits that came out of the pipe. Luckily had mate to place hand over the foresaid hole. So.... How may boats have skin fittings that cannot be sealed with the tapered bung? Which kind of negates the need for them and makes them pointless. Is mine a rare one or are lots of them like that.? ynot 45 Posted February 1, 2019 Author Share Posted February 1, 2019 Mine was leaking through shaft/spindle. I'm guessing they are not rated for poo and are only rated for irrigation. Boat is 20 years old not sure how old the valve was... Did not look very old. Anyway it was only a slow leak about 5lt every 3 days. More the point skin fittings should be smooth inside.... Jason128 6 Posted February 2, 2019 Share Posted February 2, 2019 Yep, have had the exact same failure, leaking through the handle seal, on closed position. 10 year old boat. Previous owner could not find the leak, and fitted a extra bilge pump in the area to deal with it! Changed to the true design valve after that. We have not had much luck with the Hansen valves in industrial applications either, they seem to fail much faster than the true design or pvc valves Quote Link to post Share on other sites
