Fogg 427
Reading all of the above - do you guys get my point about the complexities of 12v being far greater than AC!

Black Panther 1,581
Glass over ply. Switch was an automatic relay.
Crazyhorse 47
Different. 12V dc is infinitely safer and less complex. But I agree on that it could lead to false complacency and fire. AC has added bonus of 3ph. eg People were getting shocks off the showers at a camp.Only 50hz tingle sort. Couldnt figure out as water pipes were solidly earthed. Even taking a lead back to switchboard earth peg. Only way we could fix it was balancing the loads on all 3ph's. 415V AC makes me notch up safety consciousness. Only ever deal with if a sparky won't get out of bed. So BP is your boat steel/ferro? That switch that is fried, was that to turn fields off manually? Remember the old Pye TV sets? Lightly run your fingers on the rabbit ear antenna and there is a very slight tingle. Even though you are not earthed, the fact that it's LIVE,yes they had energised chassis, moving the fingers was enough to change the phase shift to create an exceptionally small voltage potential. It was the norm then to have phase as the common. Quite safe unless you connect yourself the the earth side of a 3 pin socket!

bazzathemammoth 37
Did you get the sparky to check your main neutral connection? If he didnt, dont use him again and find someone else to have a look at it. It sounds like there is a dodgy neutral to me. Believe it or not, the main earth peg does bugger all in most installations. bazzathemammoth 37
Yea. Redistributing the loads would have cured the symptom but not the cause. I hope it was sorted cuz a dodgy neutral can kill.
Island Time 1,234
Agreed Baz, sounds dodgy AF!!
Island Time 1,234
Its interesting how different people can have radically different responses to electrical shocks.
