whip aerials

So if my ssb whip aerial looks old and a bit tired what can I do to make it go the distance for another couple years?

Heat shrink over it to protect it from the sun?

Looks to have been painted at some stage but rough now.

Repaint?

Can you do fibreglass repairs with out causing interference damage?

Any ideas they are not cheap in fact almost same price as buying a sat phone which I am doing also.

Fibreglass or paint or heatshrink will not harm the signal. Do NOT use Carbon fibre as that certainly will.

If this is the type with the wire wrapped around the outside and then coated with resin, then just give a light sand and paint again. I recomend you get hold of a spray can of Rustoleum white top coat paint. It is as good as a two pot white paint outside, not expensive and easy to apply. Guthrie Bowrons have it here in Blenheim, so I imagine it would be available elsewhere from them.

Be very careful of runnign your hands along the rod as the old glass is natorious at getting into your skin and it irritates something bad.
