ok I need to sand down old gelcoat , fill cracks fair etc, sand teak cap rails and coat with flexible polyurethane sp? (uroxsys stuff) , rechaulk some of the deck.... I will be taking deck fittings off...

what is the correct order to do all this work and why...

obviously do all the prep, sanding, filling etc.... but, paint first then varnish ???

thanks P

boat is a hans christian so there is a lot of painting/varnish / sanding to do... dust will be an issue....

I was thinking doing the chauling first so that any marks spils etc would get sanded off the old gel.....

Maybe get the clear finish at least sealed before starting the other stuff, then come back and finish it???

Surely we have someone on here who claims superior knowledge.

Having done a lot of varnishing and painting on a reasonable sized vessel it made no diff for us, we just kept it very clean,

On a smaller boat I found doing the painting first and letting that cure / dry properly before varnishing worked well.

Where paint and varnish were side by side I felt that because the paint would most likely last longer than the varnish I did not want any varnish under the paint where it could cause a potential problem wih the edge of the paint lifting.

pot on with caulking the deck.... it is one job that could cause a bit of mess, do it first then any accidental mess gets cleaned up as part of the prep for paint/varnish work.
