Race is Cat 3 with two call ins. One at the start and one one hour from the finish. Great to see more two handed boats for this race. Has been a great two handed series.

starlight express. started under kite, sailed for a bit, went round channel in the most breeze of the night at 16 knots or so boat speed. bow was wet. kite down and no3 up for the reach to sail rock. harden up for the sail to kauwau. finished at 8 or 9 am and had a few drinks and a feed. after a few more drinks over a few more hours there were 38 people on board with 3/4 on the port side. bloody good taxi service with young Edwin as the driver, followed by a bloody good feed at the club with more drinking to follow. played some stupid drinking games that had chicken/rooster noises. by this stage we were confined to the boat, probably for the best.

good sail home which gave the fiji guys a go at everything except practice going up the rig. that was reserved especially for me and they went hunting for ferry waves.

think some other people got some photos

Great breeze at the start. We kept well clear of the bunch running out to North Head with the fractional genie before gibing to lay through to the Motuihe Channel. Good boat speed saw us behind Dainade by then. Mixed-T had a fired up start with some big round ups- finally dispatching their second prod. In the channel Danaide also had some problems with their kite but ultimately got things under control in time to have their lunch break. We rounded Channel Island just before 5.00 behind Danide and M-T. Got quite fresh for a while on the beat across to Sail Rock with some good greenies passing across the boat every now and then. Disappointing to have some of the bigger boats run us down on the way across as well. Once around Sail Rock we made Kawau on one board changing up to the #1 on the way. Some interesting lines were sailed on the way down the coast which saw some well out and some close in. Being in close paid off as we all tacked across to lay the top of Moturekareka. Dark as. Crossed the line at 4:59 AM. Before the finish boat was on station. Apparently they weren’t expecting any oats in that early. Slept until about 10.00 when everyone converged onto Starlight for the customary chats and rum tasting. Prize giving was great with good food and camaraderie. Congratulations to Mixed T Motions on their win. This is a must do series and we will certainly be back for another crack next year. Two handed on course.

Big ups to RAYC on organising this series and to their young club member who operated the water taxi. Fantatstic service.

That was a great race. We had a great time on Mr. Roosevelt. The conditions and course were perfect for our first race (and my first sail on the boat!). Extra kudos to Capella who sailed really well. The kite run to Channel Island was excellent.

It was good to meet everybody - especially fellow short-handers. See you all for the next race. Thanks for the hospitality on Starlight express!
