Entry Fees too high

I reckon at $205 Auckland Tauranga is too bloody expensive ! ($165 + 2x $20)

They have some cheek when Coastal is $150 to charge more, it should be way less !

The BMW regatta was also too expensive, paid $105 entry, got a second prize of a bottle of rum, same prize you get from the RNZYS for a $15 entry fee !

For my money, lots of leaner sailors got free rum the first night at Bucks !

Sort your sh*t out people !

In some ways its little wonder fleet sizes are dropping.

I guess with a lack of sponsors and the ever increasing costs the yacht clubs need to ensure they can run races and be there in a years time and not shutting their doors because of a lack of funds.

Then what would happen!

GULP

That makes the Gulf Classic 100 miler look really reasonable at $45 entry!!

Didn't realise the races were so darn expensive. :wtf:

At $205 they won't be making coin and will still be organised by volunteers and supported by sponsors. Oh and the same volunteers who will be sitting up all night just in case you get in the sh*t. So they are doing it below cost and still working their ring piece out especially if things don't run perfectly smoothly.

What's that squeaky noise, we got mice?

Guest Saturday Night Special

Dinghy regattas entry fees are more than that,Its interesting to look at it from a different approach .Individual has boat spends meaga bucks upgrading rig and sails then squaks at entry fee costs go run it yourself if you think its to expensive r this is not a friday piss sail in a ditch

So why do they charge more to go in one race than a seasons membership at their own yacht club ?

If they want to cry poor the solution is not to charge the small number in the fleet more money, but rather to get much bigger fleets, and this is not the way to achieve that, eh ?

Just did the Lombardini Route 66 to Whangarei two weeks ago - $25 entry for RYC and Onerahi Yacht Club members, $35 for others.

Was also part of the organising committee and with the support of our sponsors we ensured a great prize package, great publicity, a well run regatta with all the elements of the Auckland/Tauranga with a pilot boat in and a boat package for all competitors which included a litre of Mt Gay.

The race format is the same only half the distance.

Each boat got more back than the entry fee in value.

We did not choose to use the services of Coastguard for radio skeds (at a cost) and did this ourselves (which up until a few years ago was the go for all events). I would suggest that this would give patient volunteers who are manning finish boats etc. something to occupy themselves.

And no, the Clubs are not out of pocket.

The race was run under Cat 4 with YNZ's endorsement, further saving money

I can only suggest that if finances are a factor in racing, you support this race next year which can only grow.

Whilst I have some sympathy Mr Wolf, after all my calculations say I spend about as much on race entries in a year as I do beer which seems to be fundamentally wrong, I wouldn't hold up CC as a shining light in comparison.

CC is $150 + a compulsory $30 water taxi vs. Tauranga's $165 + $20 a day for a marina, so really the difference is $15 or 10%. Personally I'll take the marina over the water taxis and pay the extra.

It's not really the entry for these events that get to me but some of the others and that they seem to have hiked 50+% over the last few years.

Still, reading some of the stuff on links from the QT threads it was interesting to note fees of $150 for ton cup trials back in the mid 70s which adjusted for inflation must equate to well the wrong side of a thousand so perhaps we have less to complain about than we'd like to think.

What is the course for this race? I saw it 'advertised' on crew, but was otherwise tied up that weekend. Would love to do it next year - we need more of the coastal experience :)

Hey Mr Wolf, you can anchor just off the club if you want, or I know where there's a mooring, all the multi boys could anchor down the waikaero estuary if you get there on high tide is good, it drys out at low tide then a little walk down the road and you are at the club. its free. sorry to here about entry free being so high. Im not doing it this year because cant afford it, and we did the raid last weekend. It would be good to see the wooden dog down here and the rest of fleet. call me, could help with tansport. 0272220789 Lance

Hey, I mean we are definitely doing the race,

A bit of Club bagging gets a bit of a discussion going.

No bad comments from me on the excellent hospitality and all the good work from tons of volunteers.

Timberwolf loves coming home !

Good to hear you are coming down Mr Wolf. Do spare a thought for Tga sailors, boats to Auck the weekend before the race, wife drives up to pick them up, $70 petrol. Berthage for us is 4 nights $90. Charter bus back to Auck $36 so that is $196 and we haven't paid the entry fee yet!

Didn't do the Coastal last year, berth that at Easter cost me $50 a night was $120 a night, x5 = $600, petrol Auck and back twice $140, entry fee $150 plus water taxi $30 that's $920 just to get to the start line.

Racing is good fun but it sure ain't cheap!

Good Tauranga folk, if I can get someone to do the updates here I was going to look for a ride (still not confirmed) but should it work out, my family will be driving to Tauranga Fri in an 8 seater, perhaps something could dovetail there?
