Dehumidifer

Recommended Posts

My dehumidifer after 6 years of solid service finally packed it on so I purchased a new Dimplex unit.

However each time I come back to the boat it is turned off. I am putting this down to possible power surges from mains power at Westhaven, which is rendering it useless.

My old one had a dial so whenever it was plugged in it ran 24/7, this new one is digital, and thus needs to be turned on each time.

Clearly this isnt doing the business for me. Ive had a sparky try and modify it with a relay but it still isnt doing it.

Can anyone recommend a unit that will stay powered up, ie is not digital?

There is nothing more fecking annoying than coming back a week or whatever after soaking the ole girl to find it festering

Cheers

Tomo

While on the subject. Anyone know where to get the small baby sized ones?

I saw one a while back, on a 1020 I think, and it was very small and just sat in the galley sink draining down that. A damn good idea I thought, no having to remember to empty the tank or run the risk of bilges filling if the fecker doesn't shut off when the tank is full, as mine did a few months back, the bastard.

It was 350mm high and 300mm odd sideways.

You have to be careful when looking at the small ones. There are two types. The refrigeration type, which can only go so small, then there are the ones that use the Peltier electric plate type, which are not so good and can use a bucket load of power for what they do, and then there is the one that uses an absorbant chemical that drips the water into a container and are next to useless, infact just a step above leaving a damp sponge out to hopefully sop up some humidity.

When I got to NZ 8 yrs ago I bought 3 x Sukis (2 for home and 1 for boat) cos they looked suitably simple and cheap (under $100) and worked either by filling the reservoir (for home use) or by external hose draining into the sink (aboard AC).

They've worked well until a few weeks ago the one on AC no longer drains via the external hose but seems intent on filling the reservoir - which means the float switch shuts it down when full, probably only about a day of running. So in the last couple of days I've swapped around 2 AC/home units and they are working fine.

I did swing by Bunnings the other day looking for another Suki of the same model/price as a backup but it's obviously the wrong time of year as they are low on dehumidifer stock. So maybe in 6 months time again.
