Kattywampus Lost on South Pacific Reef

April 14, 2010 – Doubtless Bay, New Zealand

We're sorry to report that the Port Townsend, WA-based Golden Wave 42 Kattywompus was lost earlier this week when she struck a reef on the North Island of New Zealand.

According to an emailed alert from South Pacific cruiser Bob Bechler of the Seattle-based Gulfstar 44 Sisiutl, "Brad Nelson and Linda Attaway were coming into Doubtless Bay across from the town of Manganoui when they hit a reef and lost Kattywompus. They were able to deploy the liferaft and both are OK." Local observers were apparently helping them ashore as a Coast Guard helicopter arrived in response to their EPIRB. "The water came in so fast that they didn't even get to grab their ditch bag," says Bechler. "They report that they have nothing at this point, but are being well looked after by the locals."

Hadn't seen/heard anything in the local media.

She's a bit wide open bay, although not without things to hit and perhaps deceptively wide if you are a bit trip-weary and looking forward to a rest. Should be plenty of help available if salvage (boat or just gear) is an objective.

The Albert reef is hard to spot, even in daylight with a local navigator on board during this years New Year Day's race.

It was the windward mark.

Fair Way reef futher in would be tricky at night, especially without large scale charts and poor visability. I think it was raining or drizzle in the far north yesterday.

I spoke to a local last week , apparently it still on the reef, locals have been busy cleaning it out of any usable gear!

Is Alberts Reef the one furthest out to sea with the mark? (Got no charts here). Spent summer holiday up there this year. Nice part of NZ..

Yes - the image I posted above enlarges if you click on the little magnifying glass icon but not really enough to make the labels readable - I reduced the file size quite a lot.

(Got no charts here).

This should ease your pain and get your online time up to 20+ hours per day

OK. Know it now. We did some fishing out there. Spooky rock. Comes straight up from 40 metres. It IS lit and marked though.. Wouldn't like to hit it. Big swell even on calm days.. The chart is brilliant!! Thanks.
