Like to do it on your own? ..Y88 Single Handed Champs 19/05

Y88 Association

Recommended Posts

The Y88 Single Handed Champs is one of the Y88 Association's more popular events.

This is a one day regatta featuring two harbour courses.

You can leave your spinnaker and no. 1 headsail at home. Races are sailed "no extras" on number two headsails.

Great fun, no holds barred, and no excuses, sailing one design with no crew to blame :)

The regatta is hosted by RAYC, with first race starting at 1130 and a prize giving and complimentary BBQ at the club starting 1700.

88 SINGLE HANDED CHAMPS

13-Y88SINGLE-63.jpg

Great day on the water with the breeze starting around 10 and building to a steady 25 knots with gusts to 30-35 knots. That is definitely on the limit for a "weekend warrior" on a non foiling single handed monohull.

Ten boats entered and had a fine old time tacking and gybing their way around the racing marks bordered by Bastion Point, North Head, Mechanics Bay and Devonport.

By 1300 there were plenty of random manoeuvres, flogging sails and tired bodies. With the wind at 25kts and gusting over 30 the decision was made to call it a day (reefing a Y88 1 up might be a bit of a challenge for many of us)

Jacko on Sailor Moon picked up the Bruce Elliot Memorial trophy with a well deserved first on line leading from start to finish, followed by Mike on War Machine and Benny making a "rock star" appearance on Skitzo in third.

Thanks to Rick from Y88 assoc and Leigh and Suellen from RAYC for organising. You can bet there will be another enthusiastic turnout for the two handed champs in a months time.
