Seilflechter - german ropes etc

Anyone heard of this company? Sorry the site is in German but there's no English version.

Seem to make rope in many flavours. Also a large range of blocks, shackles jammers and other deck hardware.

Mostly seems their stuff is made in Germany, but some also from Italy and a bit from China.

Just wondering if it's any good. I mean it doesn't feel as nice as the ronstan stuff but it's easily available (ie I don't have to drive into germany) ad a little bit cheaper.

They make rope and buy the rest. They are quite big in the climbing game. From the little I've heard, well worth a suss would be the call.

Don't forget the thing business is supposed to do today is sell 'the brand' and that way you are happier about buying the branded product. Where or who makes the product is often someone else completely.

Like most places these days Dr W, look hard, ask questions if knot sure and go elsewhere or ask further if the answers don't stack up. Ask them a semi-technical question or 2 that you already know the answers too, that often will show up the people who do actually know and the people who are just salesmen looking for a sale.

Most used boat ropes tend to wear out or get damaged before the UV becomes a noticeable issue. See a few boats that don't move with UV starting to get at the exposed ropes on occasions. Generally knot an issue with good fibres and with those that are UV sensitive if they are treated accordingly i.e. coated or covered in some fashion.

There is more fibre being made in the east, some of that is marginal but most reputable makers don't use the stuff. Lots of knock-off Dyneema being made there and most is very dodgy. Again the good guys are staying well clear of it, knot to mention DSM just nicely screwed some users of it in Singapore so that's made a few go "Opps, knot using that now". Apparently DSM can't touch the makers of the knock-off but can deal to anyone outside of China who uses it, and they have been.

Buy that cheap braid at M10, Placemakers, Warehouse and the likes and you'll probably have UV issues pretty quick. Some of those prices means it just can't be made of good stuff and it's obvious to the eye some just is shite. Fine for tieing up the dog, stuff on to trailers and the like but knot for something real important.

Thanks KM,

I've looked around a bit and now pretty sure their rope will be up to the task. Seems to be a well respected outfit in that regard.

Their other stuff they have made for them I'm not sure about. Asking questions is def the way, but a little tricky when the only place you can get sales contact is in the "Nautic" section of the big 'ol home handyman hardware store and the pimple-face assigned to the aisle for the day speaks only his own strange dialect - and seems to be in love with his cellphone! grrrrrr!

Might hit a few german forums and get some opinions.

Thanks

Yeap Dr W, a lot of their stuff is made in the east and rebranded. But that's no different than most really these days, us excluded. We do get some bits from there but to nothing even close to the degree most of our competitors do.

A huge pile of rope coming out of the east into mainly the hardware more than marine area is made from the scraps left over from carpet makers and the clothing industry. Hence a lot lower garde than what it the marine norm. That affects longevity, strength and price. If the hardware shops used marine retailer margins the ropes should be a lot cheaper. Contrary to public belief marine retailers don't have anything like the margins often seen in the hardware game, the big box outlets included.
