  1. Autostream is very good - ours is on 60hp with 3 blades - feathering stainless. Has done about 2000 hours over 12 years and no maintenance apart from zinc change and occasional shot of grease and coating with propspeed. Easily adjusted for pitch and excellent performance forward and reverse. Cruise 7 knots max 8 knots on 40 footer. 30mm shaft.
  2. Check this out https://www.facebook.com/goldengloberace/videos/2087915674795153/UzpfSTE3ODA4OTg1Nzg3OTEyMzA6MjEyNzk5MjU2MDc0ODQ5NQ/?hc_ref=ARRr7pEpOKdW-MNUhEbqF7B-_x_gQNyWOJxv8eQccG03w-Ha4x9HsuNqFLc87ARuKHc&fref=nf
  3. Thanks guys - some good tips. I am not that fussy either but ongoing problem with one foot of pushpit that had wet rope resting on it for some time. Ever since it is badly rusty looking which can be removed with polishing but soon comes back so really needs passivating. Will try some of the remedies suggested, possibly the milder ones before trying the Hydrofluoric acid which I was aware of and also aware of its nasty properties.
  4. Yep cruising cats do go over. Sometime ago while in Nelson one went over I think not far from the port. I don’t know why but possibly a sudden gust of wind. I have also just read about that Piver going over after the Transtasman - that was in very benign conditions apparently.
  5. The videos on the website are really good. All sorts of interesting stuff about such things as boat preparation and tours through some classic boats eg the Pen Duicks. https://www.facebook.com/pg/goldengloberace/videos/?ref=page_internal https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHAanPHup_V8JHJLSwQbKmQ
  6. Tips for polishing st st stanchions, pushpit etc How to passivate ?
  7. Yep biggest problem is too much toilet paper or such things as tampons. Never had a problem with blockages in the last 40 odd years but 2 blockages (one of each type) in the last 6 months. Not much fun is an understatement. Can’t figure why people don’t understand multiple cautionary signs. Now make doubly sure of briefing visitors as don’t want to go through that again. Also got rid of a couple of right angle bends - replaced with hose.
  8. Yep - General Marine has good stuff that is smooth inside and not hugely expensive.
  9. Cheers Steve - might give you a bell when we get up Pahi way.
  10. Last time we went around going south we were probably 2 miles off. A fishing boat going around at the same time was probably about 5 miles off I would say. Steve how is cell reception in the northern Kaipara around Pahi, Tinopai, Batley Tapora, Kellys ?
  11. Been around the capes 3 times but I am a slow learner. Every time a bit of a slow trip due to being too close in and getting caught in the tide rip. Am planning to go around to Kaipara again in the new year so would be interested in any thoughts on an optimal distance off the capes. Some of the RNI guys likely have a few ideas.
  12. 316 in timber will be fine. Use plenty of sealant. Our Lidgard built in 1982 had all deck fittings refastened around 10 years ago with 316. The old fastenings were all sst and likely only 304 from that time. Out of all the deck fittings from memory there was only one that showed any corrosion of the fastenings and that was in the aft part of the boat. The stem head fastenings were fine.
  13. https://lisablairsailstheworld.com/blog/2017/3/14/cape-horn "Back on deck I made my way to the back of the boat to deploy the series drogue. I had pre-prepared it for this storm so all I needed to do was undo the bag, check all lines were clear and drop the sinker (weighted end) off the back of the boat and let it pull its self out. The minute it was out there was a remarkable difference in the boat and how we were sitting to the swell. A series drogue is a length of line that has over a hundred different little cones or mini parachutes. The Drogue is set on a bridle at the back of the
  14. This video in that series is pretty cool https://youtu.be/6lq5wAg_Fe4
  15. Timbers are in amazing condition. Should be going in a museum - can't believe the low lifes that would hack it with a chain saw.
  16. Yep - listed here: https://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/colin-mudie-53-1994/218140

  18. Back in the day of cold moulded Kauri boats a lot of boatbuiders and designers specified Iroko for keel floors, rudders, skegs etc. Hard, tough timber.
  19. Going to Coastguard - seems they have lost a charger.
  20. Radio still transmits I think but does not receive. My feeling is that it would not be worth repairing unfortunately. What would be useful though is the battery pack and the spare alkaline battery pack, the aerial and the 240v and 12v chargers. They would also likely suit a M34 or M35 or M36. I would prefer to give it to someone who has one of those radios as it is more likely to be useful that way. PM me if interested - I am in central Auckland
  21. Cav 32 is a good little offshore and heavy weather boat. As others have said clean bum and good sails will make a big difference. As BP said the sail area is a bit small due to half ton rating but they are a magic boat upwind in a strong breeze with that 50% ballast ratio. If it were me Iooking for more speed in the light i would be considering a more powerful donk and a 3 bladed feathering prop or if you really would like light air performance maybe changing to a different boat may be the best option.
  22. Thanks IT Speaker fine - sound comes from speaker with squelch open and Aquaquake sound works fine. The radio is 10 years old from Safety at Sea and I bought it because of ICOM's reputation but the the thing has hardly been used and is in mint condition, with no salt damage so not too happy with ICOM any more.
  23. Wondered about that - it is slightly bent. Guess the thing to do would be to find someone with a similar radio. ICOM want $115 just to look at it. May as well buy a new one. Any recommendations for radios ?
  24. I have a ICOM VHF Handheld IC-M33 which is not receiving. It appears to be working ok part from that ie it is transmitting ok. Any ideas ?
