    AC day 4

A few questions and observations that someone may be able to comment on: Rig tension - side stays they don't appear to be particularly tight ? Mainsheet - looks as though loads are not that high - on the boats with ropes/winches the trimmer does not wear gloves and the helmsman also seems to easily hold the sheet during gybes. Jib sheet - who controls that and how - is there a winch ? In the last race when ETNZ crashed and rudders let go what was the risk of a capsize ? In practice ETNZ sometimes sailed without a jib - any comments on that ?

    AC day 4

On the Vodafone site there are some good Tasker and Lester interviews Particularly the day 4 review - talks to shore boss about the wing etc and good interview with Blair Tuke - he speaks very well. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=vodafone%20new%20zealand

    AC day 4

yes tried it Apparently it is just the audio off one boat or maybe both with no commentary. You could listen to Lester/Tasker audio at the same time: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwXTOn3gkbnOPyb58whfjvQG09sLZHRZP&dclid=CNL6-dnpltQCFdIaKgodKxMFYg
  4. Those biscuits are disgusting - tried one the other day out of an expired raft - had to spit it out.
  5. thanks Changed - great report And I didn't have to trawl through the crap on facebook
  6. Second that - general marine for hose clips
  7. Lip seal with O ring - replaced once in 10years and 3000 hours Never had a leak, not even a drop - touch wood and no wear on shaft, greased say 6 monthly (It has a small water cooling hose attached)

  9. A while back we had untold grief with Orams diesel so I don't go near the stuff but maybe their tanks are better now. I use the Go Fuel and add a little Grotamar - expensive though from Smart marine - are there any cheaper sources of grotamar ?
  10. Is there likely to be TV coverage here?
  11. Get one of these - very cheap insurance for your engine: http://aqualarm.net/cooling-water-flow-c-2/ This alarm has gone off in our boat at least a dozen times over the years - generally blockages with seaweed. We have 2 screens, one close to the skin fitting and another after the salt water pump. The second one is to stop the oil cooler getting blocked if any vanes come off the saltwater pump impellor. Got the strainers from general marine services in Pakenham St
  12. Been great following the race from the sidelines - bit easier than doing the actual thing ! Great effort from all the crews. I thought Ilex might have gone a bit better - did they have steering issues ?
  13. had same problem Got a good one from the warehouse - surprise surprise but it was some time ago
  14. And if they adhere to a similar crazy requirement to up north with a clean within a month or antifoul within 6 months there are definite increased costs to boaties. Meanwhile cruise ships coming here in ever increasing numbers and the most likely source of these pests. The 6 month / 1 month thing really annoys me and will definitely increase costs as each time you water blast antifoul is removed meaning it does not last as long and reantifouling is not a cheap exercise. As well it is likely a self defeating requirement with less effective antifouling resulting in more fouling. Nobody
  15. Another example of total disregard of the cost to individuals of a dubious strategy likely to fail to achieve its objective. In a similar vein while waiting to board car ferry in Picton there was a guy going around checking vehicles for Didymo. In my observation he checked only one or two vehicles out of a shipload and the check was a brief questioning of the driver asking where he had been and that was it ! http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/news/201701/plan-to-reduce-marine-pests-in-fiordland-closer-to-reality Could be expensive having a dirty bottom in Fiordland ! 16. We have Webasto heater from Half moon bay electrical which I think is around 4kw in a 40fter I think the 2 kw would be too small Diesel heater is great and helps keep boat interior dry and good for drying wet gear. We have a vent into the heads and by closing all the other vents it works well as a clothes dryer.
  17. Congrats, you won't go wrong with a Wright boat, built a Lotus 10.6 in Kauri many moons ago, it was an awesome boat, sailed well and a ton of room for its size. Bit flat in the bottom though so did pound a bit going to weather. Like I said I prefer the aft cockpit but my first offshore a long time ago was in an Orams 53 centre cockpit to Tonga and it was fine.
  18. Centre cockpit not nearly as good as aft cockpit for the reasons IT mentioned plus cop more weather and make the main cabin much smaller with usually high and steep companionway steps. Also not nearly as good at anchor as you are a long way from the water and more difficult to get on and off the boat. I can't think of any advantages for centre cockpit and yes give old teak decks a miss. The best boat is definitely one that is looked after and someone else has spent the money on it. These days you don't need SSB, and Iridium satellite system is a better alternative.
  19. I have found the Predictwind people very helpful to my many questions via email. I suspect they don't have phone contact because they would be overwhemed.
  20. Spot on Steve - well said - I was not going to post again but your comments sum it up perfectly. Interesting to see the number of posts in such a short time. This topic has struck a raw nerve. How do we get the likes of MNZ, Govt and councils to take notice, see sense and maybe read some of what is written here - a forlorn hope I feel. The lifejacket legislation/ local body rules is another bugbear of mine along with the fanworm thing, all costly and irrational imposts on the average boatie. As mentioned earlier we haven't yet sunk to the level of over the top as in Australia but give it time
  21. Herald is desperate to sell papers that's why most front pages have stuff fuelling the housing debacle. As for this story - they should leave the guy alone. He has done amazingly to make that trip around the feared East Cape and must have struck some reasonably big seas. It sounds like he possibly was under prepared but he has not requested help from anyone and will have learnt heaps from the experience. Back to basics sailing - I like it, reminds me of being warned not to leave Tutukaka in a strong NE many moons ago in a Stilletto also with little experience and no communications - we had a
