  1. We were on the water, courseside on both Saturday and Sunday. We had sailors on the boat ( a Young 11) who had been to the last AC in Auckland and said that the SailGP set up was far superior. The action just that much closer.  On Sunday we were anchored to leeward of the entry to the start box which meant we were very close to all the pre-start set-up and jostling. The speed, combined with the noise of the boats made for pretty exciting viewing.

The event was very fortunate with the weather, although March is normally pretty settled ...in the last 24 hours we have have had average windspeeds on the habour well into the forty knot range...las time I checked the average was still in the high twentys.  It would have been good to see the entire fleet practice on the Friday also in a tad more breeze.

I thoroughly enjoyed the racing, although like others it is definitely an instant gratification event ( 30 mins approx total racing on Sat over three races). The fact that the racing is located within a marine mammal sanctuary places an unusual constraint on event management too, with considerable resource being put in to ensuring risks to the resident Hector's Dolphins are minimised.

Much of the flow on benefits to the Lyttelton and wider Christchurch community are now being actively debated...

The publicly accessible near shore infrastructure such as launching ramps and adjoing jetties, commercial haulout, and breakwaters (wave attenuation) remains woeful... compared with similar infrastructure elsewhere in New Zealand harbourside cities.

  2. Is Drinks Trolley doing a buffalo girls around the high?  the inshore boats are in for some mean breeze rotation towards land. Which way would you go? big blocking no wind high about to land splat all over the race course?

  3. From a purely rational perspective - it is cheaper to simply buy a new unit at $399 on special with a 10 year service and battery life that the manufacturer certifies.  To dispose of a unit, you simply break the unit open and disconnect the power supply - then dispose of the battery carefully.

    why not the large bowl?

I sold the last RM69 components that Burnsco had in stock several years ago - it was the full RM69 toilet and it went into Flying Machine an Y88 based in Lyttelton. They were considerably lighter than current offerings from Jabsco etc.

  5. So I now have had a response from YNZ .  The multiple club affiliated members are assessed as at 31 March (EOFY I assume) in any year. Weird assessment time in my view.

Therefore to be eligible for an YNZ affiliation fee refund you have to nominate your primary club;  then complete the attached form;  and then get each club and its commodore you do not wish to pay an affiliation fee (or seek an affiliation refund from) to sign the attached form to be able to apply for a refund from YNZ on your behalf.

    Thoughts?

    Someone is watching......

Actually I worked out I need a 6.032172 so will my 6hp suffice? While the rule says 0.6kw per metre their translation to .25hp per foot is out.

I have no problem with carrying a motor, it's the arbitrary LOA thrown together by people that think they know more than designers and marine engineers. That displacement, windage, prop size, torque, gearing, 2/4stroke play no part in determining a safety factor

    Screen Shot 2021-09-06 at 7.16.30 PM.png

    Interesting isn't it Eliott5.9 is 0.6kw x 5.9m ( elliott 5.9) =3.54kw OR  0.25hp x19.357 feet= 4.839hp (not 4.7472hp!) - quite a diffence - the rule is an ASS.  So to race a 5.9 in an open trailer yacht event you would need a 5hp motor.  A 5hp motor on a 5.9 isn't going to make it any safer in 40 Knots plus...

A pilgrimage to the big island is definitely on the agenda. Discussed it over alcohol with Paul Davies :-). I was thinking either Nelson or Waikawa regattas. But anything is possible. Not this year due to Covid uncertainties.

Will have a look at notice of race. Long way to drive to find out you're excluded As I understand it there is no sport trailer yacht division. We have a 300kg bulb, legal bunks, stanchions and lifelines, no ropes down below but if they apply the same rule as they did to Fantail then we don't even qualify as a sport trailer yacht. Our sistership 44Forty has a TY rating but evidently it's only provisional until they measure it which has never happened - clipboards, tapes and pull-downs....... and we can;'t piggy-back on their approval anyway.

Oh and I got told that in order to register as a trailer yacht or sport trailer yacht I need to get a 6.2hp motor instead of the 6hp I have that pushes us at 8 knots. And, I'll need to apply, and be issued a new 4xxx sail number which means all my sails have to be changed. I can't use my existing sail number unless I pay YNZ $400 to use it as a personalise TY number (you can't make this sh*t up)

Things are picking up in the upper north island with Whangarei leading the charge. (understand they recently bailed from NZTYA)

I'm not sure the modified Elders ever met this rule either...

    (i) The internal cabin length (excluding area under the cockpit) shall be not less than 40 percent of the overall length of the yacht excluding any prod or bowsprit.

Prety good if you can participate in 5 club events at the same time. Pay the fee through the club which you are most active with and deduct from other clubs. It then becomes the secretary job/workload to explain why member 62 has deducted levy.

I think most clubs would simply say XYZ did not pay the full single membership fee as passed at the last club AGM and therefore their membership has been revoked...

  9. I spoke with YNZ today after waiting over a week for any sort of reply to my previous phone call. The staff member I spoke with was very polite and very aware of my previous enquiry via another staff member, and had my contact details. It was outlined that a staff meeting was being scheduled to discuss my query (and no doubt others) on how YNZ would proceed. I mentioned the 2017 resolution and that it wasn't a particularly good look that YNZ appeared to be ignoring a resolution of its Board at an AGM. Apparently, it was also discussed in 2019 ( haven't bothered checking). It was confirmed as an individual I'm not a YNZ member . I note I don't have any power as I'm not a club in any regard.

I breifly discussed becoming an individual member of YNZ but it was confirmed that the type of membership was limited and  I needed to be a member of an affiliated club to use the racing rules etc ...  somewhat circuitous.

    I will wait and see...

    In a similar vein.....

Included in each car/motorbike registration fee is a charge for ACC.

If you own 3 cars you pay 3 levies yet you can only be hurt in one car at a time.

Should you refuse to pay the ACC content of the other 2 cars?

the rationale is armourplated... so DP no doubt as a member of multiple clubs you have no issue contributing to YNZ multiple times?

No you have a YNZ issued CLUB membership card

Generally only clubs are members of YNZ but you can if you so wish become a personal member. You will still have a join a club though

Intresting isn't it...so if I applied and became an individual YNZ member would the clubs I'm a member of still charge me or pay an SEM or similar fee for each of my memberships? Or could I apply for an exemption because I'm an individual member of YNZ?

On your remittance from the club, just deduct levy and explain why.Makes no sense pay levy at 3 or 4 different clubs.

Did this today with one of the club's where I have been a member( and renewing membership)  and got this response

    XXXXX is affiliated to YNZ.

You are a member of YNZ by default if you are a member of XXXXX

Yes we have other members in the same situation as you.  They all pay us the affiliation fee (as well as to the other Clubs they are a member of).

Last time this happened I contact YNZ for the process and they advised that all members must pay via the Clubs they are a member of and then the member must contact YNZ directly to have any multiple payments refunded.

If you need further clarification, feel free to contact YNZ directly.

Not really the response I expected. Thoughts?

I see the following defs from the YNZ constitution (https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/sites/default/files/2020-07/YNZ Constitution.pdf 05/08/21)

Individual Club Member is a natural person who is deemed to be a member of a Member Club in accordance with its Constitution

Member means a Member Club, entity or individual which has been admitted within the rules of this Constitution and which has fulfilled the conditions of membership

11.0 MEMBER APPLICATIONS, ENTITLEMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS

11.1 All Members are bound by these Rules, the Regulations, by-laws, policies and procedures of YNZ.

11.2 In order to receive or continue to receive membership entitlements, Members must meet all requirements of membership set out in these Rules or as otherwise set by the Board including payment of any membership or other fees within a required time period.

11.3 The failure by a Member to comply with Rule 11.2 may result in withdrawal of membership entitlements as determined by the Board but shall not excuse such Member from being bound by these Rules.

11.4 Member Clubs are entitled to:

    a) Participate in YNZ’s and their Regional Association’s activities subject at all times to being eligible for, and complying with, the terms and conditions of such activities;

    b) Receive notices and papers and be able to attend (at their cost), speak and vote at General Meetings via a Delegate and in accordance with the Regulations.

11.5 Individual, Class Associations and Maritime Members are entitled to receive notices and papers and authorised representatives are able to attend (at their cost) and speak at General Meetings but are not entitled to vote.

11.6 Life Members are not required to pay any membership fee and they are also entitled to such other benefits (if any) as determined by the Board. Life Members may attend and speak at General Meetings but are not entitled to vote.

Pretty sure I'm not a member the club is - or am I looking at this the wrong way? I only want to pay one YNZ affiliation fee.  It isn't the quantum - its the principle.. Thoughts?

As I understand, it was purchased by the developer. If you buy a section in the development, it comes with the right to access and use the wharf, which they have done a significant amount of work to repair.

I think there is also a council bylaw that says anyone is allowed to load / unload passengers onto any private wharf. If you were to do that onto the x Jorgies wharf, you’d have to walk down the beach to the road, as you wouldn’t be allowed access across the private land that was the yard.

Matt - any subdivision of land adjoing the CMA should have/ would have required the setting aside of a suitable esplanade reserve above MHWS.  Would be interesting to see the subdivision title plan.

  14. An older southern pacific donut style boat with a centre seat/thwart.  Had a couple empty 23litre tote tanks in the front with my gear bag on top. 2 hp Yammie on the back jumped in and sat on the seat facing towards motor but my bag was pushing me back towards the motor so no clearance to pull start... so I moved sideways to pontoon ( facepalm)... and flipped it over backwards...as I said idiot....don't be an idiot. After almost 45 years mucking about in boats you would think I would have learnt!
