  1. In a cruising context it’s a similar but different issue. If you mingle socially particularly on other people’s boat’s it’s hard to know if everyone else onboard is vaccinated. So if I’m invited to a gathering on another boat - should I stay or should I go? If it’s just me at this stage my instinct is to go ahead - because if I’m fully vaxxed then I’m protected, so what’s the worry? But if I’ve got the family inc kids who are <12 and can’t yet be vaxxed then I’m still pondering that… for example they might be mixing with unvaxxed families at school so no different to doing so
  2. Yup I reckon TNZ are really testing kiwi loyalties right now. As a Brit turned NZer I’ve always avidly supported ETNZ - bought the merch - you name it. But my support is now slipping back towards Ineos Team UK…
  3. Much as I love watching the AC spectacle and would love even more for it to be in Auck again, I’m really struggling with this one right now. The world and everyone’s priorities are changing so fast that anyone doing the rounds with ‘cap in hand’ begging for a few more $m to stage a sporting event, just feels a bit of a folly in the current climate. I know we just had the Olympics and it was a welcome distraction once it got underway and we’ll probably feel the same way about the next AC whenever & wherever it happens. But it’s the way they are going about it that just feels
  4. Many of these stories create a bittersweet feeling making me feel both awestruck & inspired and a pathetically inadequate amateur (which I know I am but don’t need reminding). In terms of feel-good enjoyment I still rate this as one of my fav reads and hard to beat:
  5. Faroe Islands: Anger over killing of 1,400 dolphins in one day Hunting is under scrutiny after more than 1,400 dolphins were killed in one day - a reported record.

Not a fan of overhead wiring. Poor flexibility for routing buses. Plus way to make the streets look ugly(er). Reminds me of when I lived in India.
  7. Thanks Josh, I’ll take a look. I’ve already bought & read the book but didn’t realise they had made the movie too!
  8. Is that the one when he ditches (or switches off) all his nav instruments sails from the islands to NZ using sun / stars / waves / birds?
  9. Just started this. Can’t believe never heard of this guy before. Astonishing achievements & resilience. Must be one of the greatest unsung heroes of sailing? Or maybe I’m the only person in the world who’s never heard of him before…

    Wingfoiling

Guy at shop I visited said if you have an understanding of sailing you already have an advantage. Next step is to learn balance on board without sail. If you’ve paddleboarded or similar then another advantage. He suggested get towed behind a dinghy and learn to balance through the lift onto foil (10-15hp o/b more than enough). Practice a bit. Then combine everything and start entertaining rest of the anchorage.

    Doubtful sound

We’re not going win any fans with this quality of gag SJB 🙄

It all sounds a bit doubtful to me…

It’s on my list to Santa this year.

Hers another lovely bird book if you’re looking for ideas for a bird-loving or nature-loving family member (it’s a fact-inspired fiction of an imaginary bird tackling the migration).

    Godwits

Bird migration fascinates me. The drivers of migration and the various routes and ways birds achieve it including the navigation is nothing short of miraculous. I used to watch the raptors on the move around S Europe and all across Africa. Plus the more interesting LBJs (fellow twitchers will recognise this acronym) 😊 I’ve had this book since I was in my 20s I think. I was reading it again only this afternoon (must be a spring thing).
  16. These spring gales gave me the courage to risk a police challenge and visit GH to replace Fogg’s dock lines with a set of more suitable sized lines (custom made a while ago by KM but have been sitting at home).

Eh? I thought about 80% of our e now comes from renewable / hydro / thermal???
  18. I think that’s a pretty fair assessment. A new Kraken is a pipe-dream for most people and as I said some of his opinions come with a ‘trigger warning’ but it’s also fair that he has accumulated a lot of good ideas and combined them all into a single package. If I think back to all my previous boats and the progression from one to the other… I can think of many examples where I’ve thought ‘Oh that’s a shame, this bit was actually designed a little bit better on my previous (smaller) boat’. Overall we tend to consider our next boat an upgrade with many improvements but it’s also true every
  19. Oh wow I didn’t realise that Kaikoura Is is a separate (owned) entity to the rest of Great Barrier Is.
  20. I should also have mentioned that Kraken yachts are Kevin Dibley designs.
  21. Interview with CEO of Kraken Yachts. An interesting watch if you’re bored of discussion on NZ Cat 1 and if you’re interested on what other parts of the world make of their own ‘offshore’ requirements snd the knock-on effect on the wider boatbuilding industry. If you want to skip the preamble and jump to the juicy bits start around 4:00 min. Trigger warning: if you’ve got a production boat and you’re precious about it’s seakeeping abilities prepare to be offended… https://youtu.be/YNHCHp8yjcE
  22. Very nice film. Yes I wonder if there a Gulf island ripe for a similar effort?
  23. Looking at this list of places (that’s technically outside the Gulf) does it risk displacing ‘hunters’ back into the Gulf?

    Electric outboards

Back on topic (which I’m guilty of taking towards EVs), I’ve now ordered the ePropulsion + package of goodies. The dealer said it should be here (in NZ) in September. He didn’t say which year…

    Electric outboards

Yes which is why I’m prepared to make the leap to an Eo/b now but not an EV. With cars we usually buy used but recent models but for an EV it might be the one time I buy new to get the best / most recent battery tech and no previous recharge cycles. But it feels just too soon so will probably do one more cycle of replacing our cars with petrol again and then switch one of the family cars to EV in about 4 yrs time. Besides, I know DoT loves my V8… 😊
