  1. I used to surf there a bit . It moves heaps , you should be ok draft wise but swing room is limited . Bottom is sand and shells unless you go up creek to the mangroves . Wellington or Whangaumu Bay outside the entrance is a reasonable north sheltered anchorage if there’s no swell .

Doing this next weekend on the 930, entries looking a bit bleak - is it a lack of promotion or an abundance of lethargy?

Maybe a 3rd division for full crew would attract a few more boats ? . Lethargy seems to be in abundance , fleets are slowly shrinking year on year , triple series seems to be the exception though .

  4. Try the marina shop , 35 year old boat very few questions asked , insured offshore by a UK company ….but we do have EWOF and gas cert plus supplied them with a rig check report and survey  .

They may ask few questions and happily take your payments but I suspect they will thoroughly examine any mishaps and local regs  if you make a major claim .

New impellers  usually come with a little packet of lube , I also just sources a new raw water pump from Energysystems.com.au for my Yanmar 30 3ym , pump has a mechanical seal fitted, and can use the std  yanmar/johnson impellors, $740 delivered

Usually for the faceplate but I guess you could use it in the housing too

I've just been talking to various professionals about getting the "Condition Assessment" done.

On the LPC certification, one surveyor I've spoken to is perfectly happy to certify and listed the requirements it needs to met, which wouldn't be too hard to achieve. They were:

    1) No hose clips on pipe run, crimps only (Noting I need a certified person to change hose clips to crimps, I can't do that myself. I don't actually know what is onboard)

    2) An LPG alarm in the bilge

    3) dedicated gas locker, draining directly overboard.

I didn't realise LPG alarms were a thing, so I will definitely go and get one anyway. I already have a carbon monoxide alarm.

There is a HUGE variance on perception of what is needed to be done. And the implications of issues. One guy I spoke to says a full out of water survey is required. In addition, where I phoned the insurer and he said out of date flares aren't an issue, the survey was indicating that things like that will jeopardise renewal (as in, it's a black mark, and too many and they wont cover you). Additionally a boat was found with non-structural rot and insurance wont be renewed until it is fixed.

Noting that what this guy was saying appears to conflict with what the report form says, which is "This report is not classed as a full condition survey and is purely for underwriting purposes. We accept that all care has been taken but no responsibility is accepted for latent or other defects"

It is a major can of worms.

We have compliance and the lpg alarm is at the stove . Definitely getting one for the bilge there’s an 8 metre run of pipe from the bottle to the stove . If there was a leak between the bottle and stove it would take a few bottles worth of gas to set the alarm off which is about knee high off the sole and the sole is waist high off the bottom of bilge . Big boom , no more talking .

Does anyone here have experience with a diesel stove?

No but I looked at them in earnest when the govt announced LPG was being phased out . You can also get diesel induction hobs , bloody spendy but no more than going full electrickery to run an induction hob

You can't escape the cable requirements.

Even at 50mm between your battery and your 3kva inverter you still need a 240amp cable which will be 75mm2.

You could derate your inverter by installing a switch board with 10amp breakers, but this will drive your cost up fast as it requires an electrician and a inverter that can have a MEN configuration. Most inverters used in 12v cheap installations are IT, they have the plug/socket on them and you shouldn't run multiple devices off a single plug.

I am yet to find a 12v LFP battery on the NZ market that is rated for 1C discharge. Most are 0.5C. Victron have a 0.7C at 24v.  So already your into more expensive battery tech. An incorrectly sized cable on a 35deg day under the bunk is a fire hazzard waiting to happen...

3kva at 12v is extremely inefficient.

I am not saying it can not be done, just getting it right and making it safe needs some fore thought, you could end up finding that for an extra 10% spent a 24v or 48v system is the more efficient option requiring less solar, a smaller alternator and a smaller battery.

Interesting idea . We have 24v to 240v with lifepo4 at home only 3kW of solar and 400ah of batts and it works a treat .we can’t have a spa pool but we do everything else no problem .

it would be pricey but switching the boat over to fully 240v is very attractive with a 24v start battery and 24v running lights etc . Induction is something that has been on my mind awhile as I can’t hear gas alarms and have seen a shed load of land yachts with induction hobs . Actually a guy living next door to where I work has the very same cheapo plug in hob you are talking about running off his inverter in his large camper I don’t know the specifics of his solar system but I do know he’s running AGMs .

Haha, so you've seen the child sized handprint on the back of my car then?

Sunblock them up then jump in the car to go to the beach... Nekminnit sunblock handprint...

But that stuff must be safe, we lather ourselves in it daily all summer.

Boat came with a permanent sunblock handprint on dodger clear

    Wow! A lot of failures.

Criteria for defining extent of failure /definition not clear on first skim.

Good resource for dated overview, but at speed industry is developing hard to apply.

Yeah bought the lifepo4s 18 months ago so it was handy back then . Hopefully they do another round of tests with new tech and chemistries , it takes some of the withcraft out of choosing new batteries

Yeah true that.  Actually the other side around Diamond Harbour was actually really close.  Great views also, just a 30 minute drive which by Auckland standards not far.

Yeah that’s only about  5Ks travelled on a good day

Well, Building on this, I've just finished the decks and structure - now the whole boat has been painted (outside) bottom of keel to top of mast. Again roll and tip, then Kiwigrip over the molded glass non skid. Took off "most" of the deck gear to do it... New Teak timber work as well, some not re-installed yet.

What brand/model cyliders are people using... I now need to buy one.

I installed a quick . Nearly got an isotherm but read many forums and they seem to have a leak issue with element gaskets . The quicks were a bit cheaper too and have several element wattage options . Bought it from Tenob in Auckland .

My cylinder has a tempering valve to avoid being to hot out of tap.

Also I would have thought that the relief should not vent at engine temp/pressure on a modern marine small engine which should be a low psi header tank cap which usually is only about 7psi vs a car which is up 13 psi.

Seems wierd...maybe some fuckery going on for it to relieve?

The HW cylinder has a pressure relief valve and it definitely opens on mine when the water gets to the temp as the engine which I’m guessing to be 80-90 degrees ?

  15. Installed  a 40L one and copied bad kitty ? By putting an inline tap in the loop from engine to tank . It gets stupid hot otherwise and relief valve wastes water too , it will open and stay open if you are motoring for long periods . Also put a 500W 230V element in and hope to run it off the inverter via solar on sunny days .
