On another note I had a really intereting meeting last week with some guys who plan to do a 2 handed world circumnavigation record in a boat uner 20ft (globe 580) next year. Boat is getting built in manly and launching late this year.  Obviously lots of hurldes to try and work through but they are pretty knowlegeable and are putting a good campaign together.

  3. We have a very active and large percentage of liveaboards here in Whangarei. Just counted in the 30 boats around the berth I am on we have 22 that are liveaboards.

You couldn't get to much further away from where you are now thou. I would suggest ringing and talking to a cat-1 issuing agent, a meet up with them and talk about your options would be a good step in starting your plans.

The Squid is a 6m sailing boat/outrigger canoe. she is constructed of plywood and will sail or motor with 2 or 3 people aboard. I’m keen on a project that has just come up so am interested to see if anyone else wants this magnificent adventure craft. There is space inside for one person to sleep or a couple to hide from rain. Feel free to message me with questions.

  5. They dived on the boats up here at the town basin this week. Will wait to see what they say but will be interesting to see what they do about all the marina structure. Will they put it in the too hard basket like Marsden cove??

  6. Thats got to be it!? Not available in Whangarei? Will ask around tomorrow. Thanks wheels.

Cool, would love to know also as I am planning on hauling mine out at Riverside this week
  7. Well was having a talk to the marina manger yesterday afternoon and apparently they are not allowed to dive on the boats at the moment. It is against OSH regulations as there has been two sightings of a leopard sea in Whangarei Harbour.....

  8. 32 ft yacht on pole mooring right next to the canopy bridge in Town Basin Marina in Whangarei, approx 10m row across in sheltered water. $125 per month, shower block etc 10m away and must be the cleanest marina services in the country. However over the winter you can talk nicely to the marina office and pop onto a vacant marina berth now and then to sort bits and pieces as needed.

Normally spend one to two months on one over the offpeak season for no extra charge. Yacht is 100% off the grid thou which helps.

Did pick up a marina berth in Marsden Point two summers ago for $100 a week with full services for a change of scenery.

  9. Yes we are talking the same thing - we have a 9.9 yamaha 4 stroke on our t.s. .the weight of it overpowers the springs and it is a real backbreaker leaning over the transom trying to lift it.lowering it isn't much easier because it wants to take off...actually lifting it off / putting it on the bracket isn't too bad because i can give it a decent bear hug...

I found that with my 9.9 4 stroke it was a huge PITA to lower and raise. It would not unlock on one side if it was not pulled up dead center on the release bracket.

  10. Reading it at the moment and they are saying no arriving into any harbour, estuary or offshore anchorage with out antifouling being cleaned. They are talking about being able to clean the hull in the water though and also making tidal grids availble across the region for hull cleaning.

They plan on inspecting 2000 hulls in the region annually.
