  1. Hi Aard, agree he's up for heaps however that's not what the law should take into account.

    Unbelievable that a man loses his boat and suffers severe health consequences and this guy who caused it gets a $10,000 fine.

    Recompense for the ferry guy? Apart from insurance on the ferry? What about his costs for on going health issues, loss of income, etc, etc?

  2. Spent a very pleasant cuppa hours wandering thru the basin looking at these fabulous boats. So much history.

    And lovely people - we chatted to 3 or 4 of the crews as they worked on their boats. A lot of French people. And a lot of women which is awesome.

    Will be heading out 14 Jan to farewell them on their next leg.

    Unbelievable that it's all so low key when you think of the Whitbreads of the past.

  3. As someone who has built a dinghy from scratch and modified the plans to make it two part nesting, I would recommend buying a second hand sailing dinghy and cutting it in half, inserting bulkheads, reinforcing and repainting. Simpler. I think.

    Save a lot of angst.

  4. At the first meeting (which started this whole thread) there were heaps of boaties there. Not enough room for all of. There were boaties, lots of boat tradies etc.

    You could see the council were surprised at the turnout. Even though nobody was allowed to speak, just the registered interests.

    And that meeting was same place and same time.

  5. I also contribute, it's a good resource - albeit you have to take the info with a grain of salt. And if you're really interested in the subject you searched for on Wiki, you can delve deeper in all sorts of other ways.

    Love that it's ad free and a not-for-profit.

  6. Just read a full description of what happened to Tom Robinson (the rower) on Off Centre Harbor website.

    Boat performed exactly as it should - but Tom forgot (for the first time) to shut the hatch when he went down below for something. And a larger than usual wave filled the boat. We've all done potentially daft things like this and it could have ended in disaster.

    Boat was designed to right itself - but not full of water. 

    He's a remarkable young man. Lots of info on his website and Off Centre Harbor.

  7. Sounds like a great trip you've all planned!

    I hope (fervently) our weather is better for you than it was for us last 'summer' season.

    There are lots of really good books you could buy on line by kiwis about the gulf and anchorages etc.

    Google David Thatcher - he's written a few. Plus there's the 'Coastal Cruising Guide' by the Royal Akarana Yacht Club which is updated/new editions every so often - brilliant guide to pretty much everywhere in the gulf.

    And there are others.

  8. Partners found me! They advertised on trade me in 'yachts for sale' section for a partner in a yet to be purchased yacht.

    They 'interviewed' me and we signed all the agreements then went looking for a boat to buy.

    I had a Keeler for 11 years (trailer sailer for 10 years before that) and tried to talk mates who had their own yachts into partnerships but everyone wanted to be 'master & commander' (despite them all moaning (as I did) about the costs, maintenance etc). So I sold my boat and thought I'd have a year off and think about whether I'd buy another one - then I saw the partnership ad.

  9. Hi AB, I've been in a 3 way (no pun intended) partnership of a yacht for almost 2 years. It's working really well. Didn't know the other two guys before the partnership. The key is to have like minded people - how to use the boat, how much maintenance you'll do, whether that maintenance will be bought or you'll do it yourselves etc. And esp. like minded on tidiness and cleanliness of boat after use.

    We had signed agreements on usage, cleanliness, maintenance etc. All agreements signed up BEFORE money changed hands. We also have signed agreements on what happens when someone wants to sell their share. Agreements include what is deemed individuals cost to fix or repair eg dropped outboard overboard is that guys issue to replace it.

    Boat must be cleaned after EVERY use, user must fill diesel and water and notify next user of anything appropriate - eg need toilet paper out of dish wash etc.

    Plus we use an on-line booking system for boat usage - similar to the charter boats however you can modify to suit yourself. Takes any and ALL arguments out of who uses boat when etc (we all use the boat separately from each other).

    But wait, there's more - we also have a fund for on going maintenance and insurance. We each contribute by auto payment into a 'Yacht' account. We agree via 6 monthly meetings what we'll spend the money on - as there's 3 of us, any 2 can agree and motion carried.

    Sounds complicated but it's not really, mostly common sense - just written down and signed.

    I love not being totally responsible for everything - we share the load and fortunately we have different skill sets which helps.

  10. I'd agree with Corella - IF the option is varnish vs Awlgrip.

    But for just handrails which are a small area and easily up kept every other year I'd go for an oil or a stain. Something Bunnings have that is used for decks for instance. Really easy to apply, easy to clean when re application is needed. Plus (assuming the rails are teak) there's plenty of easy to use once-every-year teak products at Burnsco etc that also have the benefit of CHEAP (in comparison to varnishes/Awlgrip etc).

    But - if you want the full GLOSSY - go for Awlgrip

  11. Re insurance (going off on a tangent here), a mate has a 28 foot Keeler made of ply, a well known Townson design. Owned for 15 years, insured same company all that time, no claims made.

    Company has told him that because boat is ply and now reached 20 years of age he MUST do (and pass) a survey every year in order to re-insure. He's in Westhaven so has to have insurance.

    Annual expenses just got a lot more expensive. And a little scarier.
