    Wheels, its jammed on the shaft, bolt busted, only way to get it off is cut it off. It was marginal whether it was repairable if we got it off anyway, so I was kinda resigned to getting a new one. And ta Wheels for the Trade Me link. Hadn't even thought of second hand!

    Hi all, thanks for the great feedback! Sorry I didn't get back to you lot earlier. Waikiore - engine is volvo 18hp series 2000, 2 cylinder drive shaft. As to gearbox reduction ratios - thats just gobblydgoop to me I'll see if I can find out. And I understand the whine of freewheeling versus locked and that some gearboxes require freewheeling and others don't. And ChrisC - ta for that info. and all the other info from you guys. My inclination is to go folding (I own a yacht to sail it, not motor, so I'd like to get as good a performance out of her as my limited ability wi

    My old folding prop is beggared. Not repairable. So I have a choice of buying another folding prop OR putting on a 3 blade standard prop (which I already own, came as a spare with the boat) on my Whiting 29. I don't race the boat, I cruise her. Aside from the obvious advantage of not spending on a new prop, what are the disadvantages (or advantages?) of a fixed vs folding? I understand that performance wise it's about a 10% loss in speed when sailing????? Is that right? Is there an advantage in speed when motoring? Also, what about other factors - like prop walk (i reverse into t
  4. As long as I have a yacht (or even if I go to the dark side in my dottage) I'll support them. Have been a member since I went sailing in boats bigger than a laser. Not supporting them just for me, for everyone. That's maybe not a popular stance? And I say to those who moan about what it costs to get their help if they're not a member - 'tough'.
  5. Hi all, I've a haul out to do in June - antifoul, fix or replace folding prop, realign shaft etc etc...........nothing too major (I hope). I'm going to do it at Westhaven - any advice as to which haul out facility to use......... Pier 21 or Orams? I understand Pier21 allow more leeway to use who I want to use to work on the boat - Orams are a little stricter?? Any other thoughts? Hopefully only out of water 5 days or so..........I'm going to book it now - nothing like forward thinking Thanks in advance.
  6. Two things: I wasn't talking about Issy Bay, I was talking about bottom end and Te Kouma. Secondly, yes we shouldn't expect the population of boat owners/crew to be any different from the rest of the nz population on average - in fact, you could argue they're,/we're more arrogant and up themselves/ourselves than the average. But - thats not an excuse for common courtesy. Arseholes - are still arseholes. Alcohol isn't an excuse. And believe me, I drink more of it than most of you.
  7. Of 3 nights away in the weekend, 2 were interrupted by selfish idiots (men & women) late at night with either music or loud talk on the transom. Monday at 2am is not a good time to choose to START drunken man chatter on the transom. For fecks sake, at least go into the cabin!. It's 1 of the major reasons I don't like going away on the big weekends. But sometimes, the weather forecast is to good to ignore! And the catch up with friends. And it was great cruising weather in the Hauraki gulf over easter.

    Big T, why not borrow some for the race weekend? If I'm not going out that weekend you can use mine....... Any of the crew you've got for the race got up to date flares on their boats?

  10. If you haven't been, you should. Stunning. Best to go during weekdays, its full on nice weekends. Plenty of space in winter - lovely despite the cold.
  11. On the Waeco type fridge, as it empties but you still want to keep the remaining beer, I mean food, cold; just cut some polystyrene blocks up into different shapes and fill the fridge up. Fridge works a lot more efficiently cooling these than air - which also escapes every time you open it. I've tested it and I believe it does work. Bit of a pain but the blocks are light, and it does teach certain other less energy conscious people on the boat to conserve power. When finished cruising, clean fridge, store poly blocks in fridge. And plus 1 on keeping the fridge on all the time, don't turn

    Interior Paint?

    I used "weathersheild" exterior semi gloss in the heads 4 years ago - still looks fine. But I ain't a liveaboard, don't use the boat anywhere near enough, so high wear & tear might be more of an issue. Having said that, it's probably a lot easier to do patch ups and repairs than using some of the marine paints. But, as with all my knowledge, I'm no expert. And I have the same interest re SanFran on headlining paint.............
  13. Thanks guys. I'll 'avago' myself although the leak is coming from under a seam - the layer that goes over the main 'hull', so I don't know that it'll work. If it doesn't - who are the "professionals"? Remember the TV programme?
  14. Hi all, my inflatable has a slow leak in a seam. Under the tape they put on. I don't think patches will fix it. Anywhere I can go to get it repaired or is their a magic glue I can use? Ta in advance.

At night, i carry a laminated fold up card thingie (I think I got it at one of the chandlers years ago when I did the boatmaster course) that has little piccies of all the lights and shapes from all angles. I can't remember all the lights, just the basic ones, so I just refer to that when needed. Which is rare.

  17. Definitely agree with the Darkside on both his thoughts. Google yacht sale and purchase agreements and you'll find plenty of examples - just simplify them for yourself. And solicitors trust acc is a good idea to. Does the current owner have a receipt from when he/she bought the boat? That would help prove ownership - or at least details of the previous owner so you can call them? Sounds overly careful - but a lotta money is therefore a lotta money to lose............... The Internet is a wondrous thing and I love it - BUT - try googling something like "how to attach deck hardware" and you'll find a gazillion different ways! I tend to go to the manufacturers web sites first for info now. Which brings me to a total thread drift - I wish people who drill holes in boats would consult the West System manuals first! Every boat I've owned has had holes drilled and NOT used the epoxy correctly or at all to ensure no water gets into the substrates. My current yacht has a balsa core..........

  22. Interesting idea Ketchup - making a mould. Not sure I have the knowledge for that one. And yea, they are plastic. I was thinking of taking 1 cheek off 1 winch, cleaning it up and giving a small section of it a sand, then add a little epoxy to see if it adheres. In the end, if it doesn't work I just buy new ones.
  23. I have a cuppla maxwell 22 self tailers on my yacht. The "upper and lower crowns" (that's what they call them in the manual - I've heard them called the "cheeks") are worn after a very long time holding genny lines. So the sheets slip out because the little 'ribs' in the cheeks are worn quite flat. Doesn't matter if there's load or no load on them. So I found out on this very website (big plug for crew.org) that ARCO in Awestruckandfailure have the parts - emailed them 2 hours ago to find out if they have parts and at what price. AND - they came back to me 20 minutes ago. Whoaaaaa - awesom
