  1. Whoops, I thought I'd deleted/retracted/altered my last post but I didn't - clearly. No offence meant to anyone. I'm talking about the STRUCTURE on the stern the AB and Cloughy mentioned, - bamboo - or other - please read what they said before posting a reply to my post.
  2. I give up. do none of you go back and read what
  3. Okay, I'm beginning to regret restarting this thread. Cannot see anything on Sth Pacific that is remotely what cloughy or AB were talking about.
  4. Okay, clearly I did not explain myself well? I'm talking about the apparatus that holds the inflatable on the stern - not what/which dinghy to buy/own. I thought I had made it clear - davits? Cloughy & AB1974 comments in first part of thread?
  5. Hi all, back on page 1 of this thread, 'Cloughy' and 'AB1974' mention a system for attaching temporary davits for putting the inflatable on - however the picture Cloughy attached isn't there. Anyone got a pic or diagram I can have a gander at please?? Ta in advance.
  6. If you don't use charities like 'Save the Children' then how do you get money to families in those countries?
  7. Welcome to NZ! If you can by/borrow the "Royal Akarana Yacht Club Coastal Cruising Guide" it would be well worth it. Covers Auckland to far north. Continually updated and written by cruisers, for cruisers. Most chandlers have it or buy on line.
  8. When I did my vhf course 15 years ago I have to say it wasn't great. It was Coastguard. They taught the theory but buggerall on practicality. The tutors were/are volunteers but not necessarily great teachers - but they're volunteers - so big ups to them! I learnt more from a seasoned sailor afterwards (in 1/2 an hour in the cockpit of his boat as opposed to 3? nights course) than I did on the course. Having said that, I'm a huge supporter of Coastguard and I hope/think their courses have improved since then. I've done 3 Coastguard courses - and my belief is they need
  9. Ooops, slip of the brain there BP! đŸ˜ĩ I've had the privilege of being on your SCHOONER so I knew that. Look forward to hearing how the heater goes.
  10. Do they stay damp and then get mildew, gunge inside the showers? There's nowhere for the water to evaporate to?
  11. A slight change of topic 😜 What system do you use to heat the inside of your ketch BP?
  12. I'm going single handed cruising (but only for a few days) on Thursday as the weather up here in the land of Auckland looks bloody good!!! Have to be back monday to get hull checked for osmosis 😟 And then go again for a few more days. Who is heading out? Might be more crowded out there than ever at this time of year! Fisherman with time on there hands, boaties just desperate for a change etc...............
  13. Heading into Kawau from southern end?

    Old Flares

Hand unwanted or expired flares into either your local police station, the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre or your marine retailer that collects expired flares (like Burnsco). Just copied that off a website - might pay to let your fingers do the walking before getting in the car though.........
  15. While I'm at it - any suggestions for the gunwhale guard from anyone else? I can buy the standard stuff as below but was wondering what else I could use? I'm trying to avoid anything too thick/large in depth if possible.
  16. Abel Seaman - I'm not sure what to use as a gunwhale fender on the dinghy. What did you use? Can't really tell from your piccies....... Ta in advance........
  17. That's a hell of a watch. Makes your skin crawl...........☚ī¸ All those involved in the rescue - awesome job.
  18. Agree with Tamure. I had a 33 footer surveyed by a very well know surveyor who called me 1/2 way thru the survey and told me not to waste any more money on completing the survey - he wouldn't take the boat out in a bath! The boat was subsequently bought by another guy who got it surveyed by a different surveyor who said it was fine. And the surveys were 9 years ago...............I see the yacht wandering around the Hauraki Gulf all the time - the owner says he's had no problems with her.
  19. Thanks TL - Durepox looks like a great product (just looked it up on various websites) - but it's a 2 pot - not really needed on a plywood dinghy that will only ever have the 7 metre viewing rule applied to it............
  20. Stupid question (I'm good at these) - any quality oil based primer is okay direct on top of epoxy? Provided the bloom is removed and it's thoroughly sanded and dusted down?
  21. Yeah, nah. Was always going to go to a hardware store - but thanks KM. My note on Burnsco was just to let everyone know that you can now order anything, not just essentials, from them. Just can't get it until tuesday.
  22. Yep, got it thanks guys - twas what I thought I'd do, just needed supportive advice 😏 And you can place orders at Burnsco on line as of this morning - for non essentials. You just can't receive them by courier (or pick them up from Burnsco) until Tuesday.
  23. BP, oil based enamel - not the house paint 'enamacryl'?
  24. Rightio, resurrecting an old thread. My back is good enough to allow an hour or so of dinghy building each day in lockdown. I've got to the stage where I'm starting to think about the final painting - maybe 2 weeks away. Subject to being able to get various bits and pieces at level 3 etc, etc. She's in 2 pieces, joining bolts made and an unbelievable number of building errors also made - first attempt at this and, in my defence, the plans from Bateau (as Abel Seaman said earlier in the thread) aren't for nesting. So a bit of guess work involved.🤔 I've learnt heaps th
