If you really want to keep the chain locker the way you have it - couldn't you build a (sort of) dorade box that goes over the top of the winch when your sailing? It just clips on 2 sides to small teak blocks you could epoxy/screw to the deck? With clips the box would be quick to release (rather than bolts etc).
Not really a dorade type, but just a 5 sided box with a base shape that follows the decks contours closely so it's as tight/waterproof as you can get it - could even rubber gasket the bottom edges/lips if need be. But I sense you're just trying to keep the majority of the water out - not every last drop?
The water is coming in through an area on the winch an inch or 2 above the deck - so if you could reduce the water coming in under the 'box'  (at deck level) to a trickle, I would think that it wouldn't 'climb' up to the part on the winch that lets the water in?

You could build a 'practice' version out of rubbish leftover wood (from your last project 😃) and just tie it down next time you go to windward in decent weather and see whether it keeps the majority of the water out?
Wouldn't be hard to make the real thing out of teak or ply or even fibreglass?

I'm with the others though re the smell and dampness you're creating down below..............

Had a nice call from Westhaven staff today asking if there was anything they could check on/do on my yacht.
After asking whether they'd mind sanding the brightwork and applying a  few coats of varnish (they refused - how rude😀 ) I thanked them for calling.
Nice to know they're still on the ball.
With all due respect, some of you on this thread, and others, seem to have a very jaundiced view of Westhaven staff. I've had a yacht at Westhaven for 15 years and the staff have been nothing but courteous and helpful. If approached properly.

And bear in mind the staff down there are also under pressure at the moment. Maybe a bit of leeway needs to be given, everyone has a rough day every now and then.

Brilliant, thanks AS. And a great tip.

Hull is put together and epoxied. Buggering off to a warm island for 10 days - work on it will continue when I get back.

Must say - I'm enjoying this project - so far.

To be fair Tuffy, when you buy i-stock photos you have no idea where they come from (unless stated - eg a landscape shot of Mt Everest). So the govt couldn't have done homework to find out about this person.
And at least they didn't stage a real photo shoot - would have been a lot dearer than the (probably less than) $100 of that image.

And talking of incompetent, I seem to remember National being sued for using music without having asked for rights?

Erice, I'm with you on the Serena Williams US Open final - her behaviour let her down, not the umpires.
And I'm a Serena fan - but she lost her cool and kept losing it. Umpire did nothing wrong.
Great to see a new champion!

I mounted a jam cleat the other day with a riser?? (adjusts the angle of the cleat to the deck where it's mounted) - did a magnificent job. Left the jammer sealant to dry, went back to boat and tried it out with the appropriate line - and I had the angle back to front...............sigh. Still, no-one was watching and you guys are good at keeping secrets.  By the way - that sealant really works, was a bi&%c to get off.

Oh, and I've also never dragged anchor, hit a dock, dropped an outboard in the water, lost an oar (while rowing!), watched my 'securely' tied dinghy drift off into the distance, fallen between the dinghy and the boat, gone away on hols with empty gas bottles etc, etc........

I'm with you FISH, have a party but think about everyone else on the water.

I'm lucky that I can avoid going away in the xmas period because i can go away lots of other times.
So I/we can go to quiet bays, and when I/we want to party, I/we go downstairs, close the hatch (or at least keep the stereo to a level that hurts our ears but no-one elses), and party without the rest of the bay having to listen to us.

The arrogance of arseholes who decide in a crowded bay at xmas (or any other time) that the stereo on the back of the boat after midnight at full bore is fab, are, well, arseholes.

And don't give me the bs that its Xmas holidays - what can u expect???!!!!!
Is that a new excuse for a replacement for common decency?

Terry B got a reaction from rmiker in Akl marina berth demand.
Is our (and I'm a newbie to marina berths - only rented at westhaven for 5 years now) attitude a case of older guys and girls remembering that berth holders had either ownership or a very real say in the marinas? How they were run etc.
    That's not so true now - it's a corporate/large council thing now.
Sign of the times? Bad times maybe?
I have to say that even at an age that's not far from retirement (read - OLD), I'm thinking of going back to a trailer sailer. I can play with her, (the boat) without the berth costs. I can launch wherever. I can walk into the back yard and fall in love with the 'view'. Yes the hassles of boats on land - but at retirement (not quite yet), I have the time to piss around with boats. And if she and I never get out on the water, we'll still love each other - at no on-going cost. Just admiring glances in the garden.
Hey, it's friday. Might have had a beer or two,......

As Erice states, it isn't just Maori (and there is no s on the end of maori - whether using plural or singular) who want it opened up - but many of you are focussing your wrath just on them. What about Fergie, the marina operator, or the Akarana yacht club?

These are (predominantly) european organisations. Going to call them out, insult them as well are you?

Suggest some of you need a cold hard look in the mirror.

Thread drift alert: I agree TimB with the "too much info" thing.

The Internet is a wondrous thing and I love it - BUT - try googling something like "how to attach deck hardware" and you'll find a gazillion different ways!

I tend to go to the manufacturers web sites first for info now.

Which brings me to a total thread drift - I wish people who drill holes in boats would consult the West System manuals first! Every boat I've owned has had holes drilled and NOT used the epoxy correctly or at all to ensure no water gets into the substrates. My current yacht has a balsa core.......... just taking some hardware off now and OMG!!!

It is not sufficient to just use a bloody sealant!!!!

    Rant over. Carry on.
