  1. I for one would support a licence and registration scheme as long as the fee went in to maritime policing and funding boat ramps/dinghy skids. Spoke to a couple tassie guys and yes registration + licence (on the water spot checks) in turn has given them better facilities rather than relying on the tax/rate payer. Unlike most states no fishing licence required but thats a separate issue. The way it stands in NZ today there is absolutely nothing stopping me from buying a 60/90ft power or yacht from a broker, nothing on the broker to say I am competent, buy the thing hammer down at westhaven,r
  2. Well just been across and back Manukau bar in 5.7 nasty,ne 8knt 1.5 se swell incoming tide, they think that is fun, much rather sail in to Tuts in a e 20+,hell of a lot safer, mind you it was nice getting up and personal with a blue shark
  3. A yr on and still undecided on whether to replace yacht or go the nasty way with a classic, had Bob Wild (cousin to Col)16ft a few yrs ago made of strip kauri and maintenance was no major issue, able to work on it home not wasting a hr going to club get dinghy out+ outboard work for an hr or 2 then repeat the process home. Peace of mind when it blows like stink lying in bed not having to worry is it going to break free or others going to hit it. Been out on a couple of new alloys and the ride was shocking considering where designs are today.

    Icebox tips

Waeco well worth the price,I have cfx 40 and ran on temp zone 4 for 5 days away camping at thames and 120amh deep cycle battery lasted just with no charge.(need to invest in a panel)forget about the crappy old warehouse chilly bins, find an iceytek bin, near freeze or hard chill items before use.Salt ice!!
  5. Advantages keep at home, maintain when you want no mooring fee, insurance no problem, down side waiting at ramps towing vehicle . Clippers are a nice vessel.
  6. Same as the head,Unless its been eaten it does go in here!!, having said that, wifey(bless her sole)decided to do the eco thing and brought same recycled toilet paper from "earthcare"unfortunately the glue/paper makes it more like trying to pump wallpaper n glue down and no need to go any further.

    Icebox tips

salt ice is way better than normal,do not open constantly and it last,
  8. When our yacht got written off (this time last year)if no buyer found the insurance company was going to get some crowd from west Auckland to come in and cut it up,somewhere out west all the dying/dead Ak vessel go too
  9. seem to recall a tape that stretched and stuck to itself, havent seen it for years but worked well, soft rubber type.
  10. have you considered the shroud roller if to protect sail on spreader?
  11. and sailing solo, what use would the manual be??
  12. Can be hard by one self if bolt rope is tight, does furler have a feeder or just straight in to slot??i have found it takes 2 and normally main up,sail down wind and it feeds in nicely but depends on sail/yacht size.
  13. depends on swell,we found opposite the whailing station behind the nook on the port side entering ok,slight roll but depends on if you like absolute stillness(family)
  14. Talking to my supervisor today regarding water in fuel, yes there is a bit in fuel but should not be detectable,if it is then the owners of the tank are not turning it off soon enough(trip switch failure)30000lt tank last 3000 lts tank should switch off as this is the water table,in general tanks get sucked clean every 2 yrs.
  15. kind of what I liked about moorings, hard to cock pick up up,which is stronger wind or tide, which way is everyone laying,The 26ft I had was a shocker in reverse, borrowed a marina once and went head in and walked it astern when time to leave.Recently borrowed a friends launch and in reverse you had to steer to stb to go straight, lucky I had watched over times before or would of been disastrous.
  16. at least the boy has his l/j on

  19. For some unknown reason when Vhf came in the silent period disappeared
  20. Fish, please send video of you eating your sailing boots
  21. It seems the problem may of raised its ugly head back in 2001 www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=192762
  22. Visual watch refers to keeping a proper lookout eyes/radar. what does vhf see?? The problem with vhf at this time of the year,is all the B/S clutter when a cellphone call will do to your mate.
  23. IT ,I think you are incorrect regarding law to keep listening watch on recreational vessels, please show where it is stated for vesels under 20m.
  24. I very rarely had the vhf on unless making a long passage or wanted the weather. In my experience of listening to a mayday call one vessel had no idea where they were and spent time describing to c/g the surrounding area, bet that is not a one off Reminds me of the lady who lost her diver off tuts,if she wasnt waving a tea towel so frantically we would never of turned around,no idea how to use a flare or vhf.
  25. Funny thing this diesel additive, never remembered the old man putting it his launch,300 gallons in the 70s nor when he had his yacht for 8 yrs and he was a marine engineer,so why are we putting it in?to tight to fill tank?
