  1. Am I missing something here, you can sail off around NZ anywhere anytime with most insurance companies you are covered out to the 200 mile zone,nz waters? Could if keen go as far south south as Campbell islands or north of 3 kings, which I suspect would encounter more weather bombs and wave height situations than one sailing up to the islands. So why is cat1 so important to ynz/mnz?? Why do you have to prove offshore experience? If it purely an exercise to save search n rescue costs to the tax payer. why not have an insurance scheme that one needs to take out before venturing offshore??
  2. Ha Ha blue light distracts elephant seals, really! When the elephant seal dives it eye turns the water blue,as blue penetrates deeper in to the water than any other colour helping it to see.

  14. The microbes have a very short life but before they die they multiply and produce waste deposits, both of which descend to the bottom of the fuel tank. One bacteria microbe can reproduce more than 7 million microbes in 24 hours. Due to the rate of reproduction and their short lives, the build-up of dead microbes can be quite fast. Any fuel tank with an air pocket will produce condensation when the temperature falls far enough, and is therefore likely to attract these tiny microbes. After a day out on the road, the remaining diesel is warm from the heat of the engine and as the temperature c

Funny you should mention sailing with oldies,1976 Dad teamed up on a yacht and even though were at the backdoor, what I learnt away from the old boy was/is valuable experience.being only 16 at the time put on the foredeck and first experience was changing a terelene sail, socking wet and hank on another. And went back the following weekend for more punishment

  20. his magnificent solid silver trophy cup was first sailed for in 1921 after Otago issued a written challenge to Auckland announcing that their leading boat would come to Auckland and race the champion of the north in a beat of five series. On March 24th, 1921 on the Waitemata Harbour the “Iron Duke” owned and sailed by Governor General Lord Jellicoe, competed against “Heather” from Otago, sailed by W.J.P.McCullouch. “Heather” and her crew emerged victorious and the cup went south to Port Chalmers until the Aucklanders regained it a year later in “Desert Gold” skippered by Joe Patrick. 22. Membership is a catch 22 situation. Does a club rely on bar sales to keep club going?admin etc or do you raise membership fees to run the club and bar takings becomes the cream for the club? If a club relied on bar takings alone it would fold like many RSAs are doing, drink driving with such low limits(why would I drive for an hour each way for 2 beers?) Push membership up and those with limited funds due to high rents/mortgagees etc drop off Yes every club wants its own identity but maybe by combining clubs together, higher membership, possibly lower fees? Our local RSA has closed but m
