Winter reacted to Rangi1 in Cruising is on the way out
I had watched a few of their episodes on YouTube and am pretty happy they've decided to leave the country. They had no respect for lock-down rules or the social distancing measures taken under level 3 and were constantly whining about everything here unless they were getting a freebie in return for promoting it. Redneck, self entitled narcissists...

Lateral I like your idea of an on off switch on the regulator supply, might try that.
The graph is from a Victron 712, cabled into a Victron Venus GX which uploads data to the cloud, graphs are then from the Victron VRM portal

Winter reacted to DrWatson in Lifting Engine with Boom
Get a big friend, or two normal friends to actively balance the boat with their body weight as you swing the boom out over the finger...
And put some tarps and polythene down to catch any crap that dribbles out of the engine. Have a few wooden blocks ready to prop the engine up to stop it rolling or turning out of control.
Winter got a reaction from Island Time in How many Americans did their marinas fry?
Okay, its just a bit of an outlandish claim.
There is no reason for more than one RCD to be an issue causing damage to another. Its incredibly common, especially in industrial areas.
If you think about how an RCD works... its just a switch, trigged by a small transformer. - there is nothing that can cause damage in that.
More than one RCD is better than one RCD, if only for redundancy means. The downside is that there are more places to check when you trip one - and either of the RCD's could trip as the discrimination is hard to get right.
The RCD in the post in the marina is principally to protect the outlet and the flexible cable to the boat, as if an earth leakage fault developed in that cable, the RCD on the boat would be no good as its downstream.
With respect, the published standards show your electrician and your friend at the council is wrong. (AS/NZ 3004.1 and AS/NZ 3004.2)
Winter reacted to Dr Dave in Offshore Medical Course
Thank you Razz, Fish and others for your support.
Steve Pope as to your comments - ".. it is surely a commercial venture."
Actually -you are quite wrong.
I do this to help NZ yachties and do NOT get paid to do so. I do it because I enjoy it, because I was asked to do it and I want to give something back to yachting.
It also enables all of the volunteers (there are many of us - Sally, Bek, Jenny, Angus and I) to donate money to a yachting charity.
All of the profits are donated to charity.
I was paid to rewrite the YNZ Medical requirements - I donated this money to Youth Sailing.
Profits from the first "Dr Dave course" - were donated to Cyclone relief in Fiji
All of the other course profits were donated to Disabled sailing.
Firstly we outfitted a boat for a disabled race officer to help her get in and out of the boat.
Last years profits are going to buy Defibrillators for patrol boats and the RAYC for cardiac arrests.
We are also putting money towards building a yacht to teach disabled sailors how to sail
I suggest prior to making ill-informed comments - you find out the facts
Winter reacted to Zozza in Customer Service - Boat Related
This forum, any forum, in fact any medium, whether it be internet, TV, radio, whatever,,, largely gives "one side of the story".Whether you choose to believe that "story" is up to you.
I've stated my "story".
Sabre has stated his.
You can, as can any punter, decide what you want to believe, and make your own judgements.
Last time I looked I lived in New Zealand, not North Korea.
Winter reacted to smithy09 in Has anyone bought overseas and saved big $?
No. Begging is wanting something for nothing. These guys give you the videos in return. You are funding them to continue producing the videos. There is a heap of work in the videos so they are not wanting money for doing nothing. If the Paetron guys are prepared to pay for this, then I consider it a win-win situation. When I lived on board in the Med for 3 years, I wrote articles and sold them to the UK yachting periodicals. Helped the bank balance. I didn't consider this begging, and I also reckon that their videos are much more work than the articles I wrote. They put a heap of effort into their work. And no I don't support them financially, just watch the vids..
Winter reacted to Kevin McCready in Wondering why the High Tides are really high just lately?
Fish, you've been warned before about personal attacks. The fact that I object to racism and misogyny is irrelevant to the science of sea level rise.
During the last deglaciation sea level rose by 20 m in 200 years. ie 1 m each 10 years, 10 cm per year!!! That's what the science tells us. The science also tells us that this time the change is happening more rapidly than last time.
Here's how I use the word "science":

Dear Lord, No!
Not another wrist slittingly tedious diatribe of pseudo facts, rants and one eyed opinions - NO!
Not another aimlessly futile climate change debate.
At the very least get this out of marine talk. Move it down to below the stink pot section in the class forums so I don't have to offend my eyes with this dribble every time I log in.
Island Time, could I propose you amend the user conditions to have an outright ban on the discussion of climate change?
It will be good for total traffic, trust me.
Winter reacted to Island Time in New Crew.Org Membership system
From tonight there are a few changes to membership.
When someone first starts a new account it will be "validating" until they respond to the system email, or it is authorised by a moderator.
Then they will be a "new member" with restrictions on what can be posted, requiring 5 posts to be accepted by the moderators before they appear in the forums.
Once they have 5, they will be promoted to the "basic member" group.
Once a basic member has 75 posts, they will be promoted to the "Advanced Member" group.
Finally, when a member's reputation is over 100, they will be moved to the "Respected Member" group.
Each group will have more rights and space than the previous group. Still working on this in my spare time, so it will likely be a few days before it's all working properly....
